Castellucci Family
debuts New Concept
on Decatur Square...

Federico Castellucci III, whose family introduced Sugo restaurants to metro Atlanta, is introducing a new concept with his co-owner and sister, Stephanie Castellucci. The siblings are graduates of the Hospitality School at Cornell University and are fourth-generation restaurateurs. Their new concept, The Iberian Pig, opens in September 29th on historic Decatur Square in the former Sage space offering an array of innovative dishes, including those that feature the restaurant’s exotic namesake - The Black Iberian Pig. The Iberian Pig is located at 121 Sycamore Street, Decatur Square, 404.371.8800. The recently closed Redfish A Creole Bistro on Memorial Drive will soon become part of the Mexican concept, El Toro, a local chain with locations in Chamblee, Atlanta and Sandy Springs. Gregg Herndon, formerly of Tiburon Grille and Taste of New Orleans opened Redfish in 2006 between Cabbagetown and Grant Park... After being closed since December ‘07, the website for Compound nightclub on Brady Avenue, says it will be re-opening in the winter ‘09, www.compoundatl.com... The former Bugaboo Creek on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta near the North Point Mall has been renovated and there is a sign up announcing Lobster & Seafood Buffet... Palate Wine Bar on W. Hill Street in Decatur has been holding beer tastings to select which beers will be carried at the sister venue, McGowan’s Oakhurst Pub, that’s expected to open in October right next door. Here are the winners so far: Great Divide’s Hercules Double IPA; Stone’s Ruination IPA; Rogue’s Kell’s Irish Lager; Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout; Ciders’ (selected breweries) Original Sin; Allagash’s Confluence; Duck Rabbit’s Amber Ale; and Dogfish’s Palo Santo Marron. McGowan’s will offer comfort food in a casual Oakhurst enclave meant to evoke the experience of a Sunday lunch or supper at home. Cozy and bright interior, accessible fare, 22 beers on draught, 100 beers in a bottle, neighborhood hangout and dining destination. Will be open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m... Construction is moving right along on the Buckhead Hotel Atlanta on Lenox Road which is to be home to one of two Shula’s 347 Grills (A Florida-based steakhouse, started by namesake Don Shula) in the Atlanta area. Sources say the Buckhead location is expected to open in the fall and a second location in the Embassy Suites Hotel planned for the Arena area in Duluth. After the success of the first restaurant in 1989, the chain now has 4 concepts in 17 states. All restaurants are located within hotels... Word around town is that Hugh Acheson, owner of Five & Ten and The National in Athens, will be opening his version of a meat-and-three near Tenth and Piedmont in the spring of 2010 called Empire State So. The 90-seat eatery will be located in an office tower on Peachtree and will feature farm-to-table fare with the idea of gathering ingredients from within 100 miles of the Metro area... Ryan Hidinger (Muss & Turner’s chef de cuisine) and his wife Jennifer are planning their own restaurant, Staplehouse, for the near future. The concept will be a neighborhood eatery of fresh, staple-driven food. Until the opening, they have introduced ‘A Prelude To Staplehouse,’ undergound dinners. Prelude is a small gathering of Supper Club diners who get together and sample six courses of various dishes. The in-home dinners are performed by Ryan, Jennifer, sous-chef Ben Barth and Ryan Turner (Muss and Turner’s) as sommelier. Concentrics Restaurants hopes to debut its latest concept, Bakeshop, October 1st in the former Gold Star Cafe & Bakery space on Peachtree in Midtown. Pastry chef Jonathan St. Hilaire will be at the helm of the 35-seat shop offering counter service for salads, soups, sandwiches and signature pastries made from locally sourced ingredients. ai3 Design will be incorporating an open kitchen for patrons and passers-by as well. Abigail Swain (Craft) will serve as sous chef and Susan Rex (H& F Bread Company) will manage the baking operations. By the end of the year plans are to expand Bakeshop’s menu to include a full dessert menu with wine and beer pairings... In late ‘08 My World Cafe was expected on Glenwood Avenue in Atlanta. This month the space appears to be getting a new tenant with the anticipated opening of I Lounge... Featuring an entree` of Jazz, Blues and Poetry, Ziggy’s Jazz & Blues is expected to open soon on Duluth Highway in Lawrenceville. Along with the live music, Ziggy’s will offer a tapas menu, full-service bar and can accommodate up to 125 people for special events... A new Caribbean Tapas Restaurant & Lounge endeavor, Entice A, is going into the former Eastern Pearl Restaurant space on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Partners Tran Nguyen, Randee Gilliam and Michelle Rouse are shooting for a November opening date. The 150 seat space is getting a facelift from the Duckett Design Group with an updated lounge feel... Another local source says V-103’s morning co-host, Frank Ski, is behind the new lounge & restaurant, Kolor, that’s planned for the lower, backside of the building at Peachtree Road and Piedmont in Buckhead occupying Suites 110 - 160. A recent building permit was issued for the space at $2.58 million... Chris & Michelle Sedgwick’s Pure Taqueria concept has opened on Chamber Street in Woodstock and the next stop will be on N. Highland in Inman Park in the former Grape space in October... Fuze Burger, located on Ponce de Leon Avenue next to MF Sushi and The Spaghetti Factory, hopes to open their doors in approximately a week. The menu will be simple gourmet burgers at a reasonable price and there will be a full bar with 9 beers on tap and 10+ HD LCDs for sports viewing. Hours will be Monday - Sunday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m... Hervy’s Rotisserie & Salad is proposing a September opening in a former Pizza K location on Peachtree Industrial in Atlanta. Hervy’s will be dine-in or take-out and will offer a healthier side of eating at a value.

Rumor mill...

Latest rumblings say Todd Ginsberg from Trois will be the opening chef at Brian Lewis’ Bocado (Spanish for bite) on Howell Mill in West Midtown that’s expected to open in September... We are following up on a rumor that a new restaurant will be going into the former Coohill’s Steakhouse location on Peachtree Street in Atlanta... There’s also speculation that Jake’s Ice Cream on Lavista Road in the Oak Grove neighborhood will change it’s name and ownership. It’s being said the new owners will keep the ice cream and add breakfast and lunch... Nectar Foods, brought to you by the owners of Bhojanic on Clairmont in Decatur, are rumored to be opening a second location the first week in September also on Clairmont Road in Decatur. The first Nectar location is on E. Lake Drive in Decatur and specializes in all-natural fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and drinks as well as ice cream, paninis, sandwiches, breakfast and pastries.

Ch, Ch, Changes...

One Eyed Willy’s on Atlanta Highway in Hiram is under new ownership and is going by a new name. Reports say it is now Big Daddy’s Beach Bar & Grill while the website (www.jollyrogersbeachbar.com) proclaims Jolly Rogers Beach Bar?... Owner Doug Strickland has sold ENO & Barrelman Wine Shop in Midtown to Atlanta Hawks center Zaza Pachulia. Latest info we received says ‘Eno by Zaza.’ Strickland and his wife opened the restaurant in November of 1999. Chef Eli Kirshtein will remain (a recent finalist of Top Chef on Bravo). The new owner has also announced that Eno will now be open for lunch... Chrysta Umberger, formerly with Restaurant Eugene, is the new pastry chef at chef/owner Jay Swift’s Fourth & Swift on North Avenue in Atlanta... After the departure from Joel last year of Joel Antunes for The Oak Room in New York, executive chef and managing partner Cyrille Holota has had to reapply for a pouring license for the revamped Joel Brasserie. The process could take a few weeks for the Northside Parkway Brasserie that is currently without spirits. You may want to call ahead if you are expecting a glass of wine with dinner, 404.233.3500... Originally at Sotto Sotto, Joe Rego left to join the team at Allegro in the Belvedere condominium building on Dutch Valley Road. Allegro closed after Valentine’s Day in early ‘09 and Rego is now headed back to Sotto Sotto as sous chef the first week in September... The latest sources are saying the addition of the second floor of Hal’s On Old Ivey in Buckhead will be completed mid-October complete with a French-Quarter balcony... Located on Green Street in Gainesville, Rudolph’s Restaurant is said to be closing and will be taken over by Mellow Mushroom... Updates on Dallas-based Consolidated Restaurant Operations Inc.’s III Forks (an all-prime steakhouse) and Cantina Laredo (gourmet Mexican fare) that were previously scheduled to open in the Terminus 200 building in Buckhead has Cantina Laredo delayed and III Forks not opening at all... David Howard’s Chicago Steaks Seafood & Pasta located on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta has reportedly been sold and will be converted to a new eatery, The Whitlock Grill. No word on how long it will take... Metrotainment Cafes, Inc., has announced the renovation of Cowtippers’ kitchen and the roll out of a new menu. “Cowtippers has been known as a steak house and saloon since I opened it in 1993,” says CEO Jeff Landau. “The kitchen was long overdue for a renovation and the poor shape of the economy made us decide to give the menu new direction.” In August, new infrastructure was created and new equipment installed. The new menu follows the current trends and focuses on high quality, creative and affordable burgers at a $5 base price.

Atlanta’s Top Chef?

Atlanta is well respresented in this year’s Top Chef show that kicked off August 19th with 17 new chef’testants. Joining chef Eli Kirshtein (Eno by Zaza) for season 6 on Bravo are two other local chefs, Kevin Gillespie of Woodfire Grill & Hector Santiago of Pura Vida. The show airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m.

has debuted in the former Silk: A Smoothie Cafe space on W. College Avenue in Decatur offering traditional Italian fare.
The menu items are based on family recipes and the pizza pies are square, beginning with double zero Caputo flour for an ending of a thin, flavorful, but chewy crust. A few honorable mentions so far have been the Margherita, Quattro Formaggio (four cheese), Mt. Vesuvius (spicy) and the Rustica as well as a Hawaiian mix, with both the latter featuring pancetta.
