In the oven...
(The following are but a small mention of the new places on our ‘Coming Soon’ radar...)

The creators of Baraonda Caffe Italiano (partners Costanzo Astarita and Mario Maccaronne) in Midtown and Ciao Bella Italian Restaurant in Buckhead are taking the former Wolfgang Puck Express space on Peachtree Street and adding a new dining concept, Baroni Italian. Expected to open in May, the 4,000 sq. ft. space will feature pasta, pizza & sandwiches. The same guys also took over Bazzaar on Peachtree back in Sept. of ‘09 and rebranded it as Publik. Meanwhile, they have also shuttered Baraonda’s sister restaurant, Enoteca Carbonari, next door and converted it into Baraonda’s Wine Room... Recent rumblings are saying Linton and Gina Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene and Holeman & Finch Public House on Peachtree Road are planning a progressive food market to open in April 2011 called Drovers. The name is from ‘those who drive cattle or sheep.’ It’s rumored Hopkins is looking along the Peachtree Road corridor in Buckhead for a location... According to an article in the Gainesville Times a new venue may be opening in the former Flowery Branch Yacht Club location, “Paul Coggins wants to serve home-brewed beer and food in downtown Flowery Branch, but he has to clear a few obstacles first. The city’s alcoholic beverages law doesn’t allow for brewpubs or restaurants where beer is made and served on the premises, and requires license applicants to have lived in Georgia for at least one year. Coggins lived in Atlanta while attending Georgia Tech and then another six months after graduating. He went on to receive a brewing certificate from the University of California, Davis, and work 1 1/2 years for the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. Now living in Suwanee, he has been in Georgia since February. Coggins is eyeing the Flowery Branch Yacht Club, a former fine dancing restaurant on Main and Church Streets, for his business, Toasted & Tapped. He was struck by the building’s location and quaintness. He envisions an outside beer garden, where ‘people can feel in touch with nature and just relax.’ If everything is approved and Coggins get both State & Federal brewing permits, he’d like to open by September.”... More rumor news, says Flippin’ Out, the burger concept that opened last year on Jones Bridge Road in Alpharetta, may be planning two more locations to arrive in the next few months. Speculation has the new units in Cumming and the Crabapple area of Roswell... Atlanta Magazine is reporting Ford Fry of JCT Kitchen will be opening another restaurant: “Fry is still planning a Mexican restaurant that he says will have an ‘Austin, Texas feel,’ with margaritas, music and fresh tortillas. He’s eyeing a Midtown location near Peachtree Street. No date has been established yet.”... Atlanta Magazine is also reporting that Riccardo Ullio (Sotto Sotto, Fritti, Beleza) may be expanding his six-month-old concept, Lupe Taqueria that opened in the former Cuerno space, into his Beleza Restaurant (Juniper Street) space next door. But to the contrary, another source is saying Beleza’s interior and drink menu were revamped and that it will remain open with a new mixologist on staff. We’ll keep you posted... We read this on the AJC food blog: “Jeff Varasano of Varasano’s Pizzeria and Giovanni di Palma of Antico Pizza Napoletana will combine forces and open an as-yet-unnamed joint venture. A few details are emerging: There will be no tables, chairs or utensils, but a roving band of ‘pizza-folding specialists’ will instruct patrons on the proper method for consuming the pies.”... The former Blue Fire Grille location on Alpharetta Highway in Roswell has been purchased by Giovanni Vassallo and will soon reopen as Nino’s Italian Kitchen. Blue Fire originally opened in early ‘08, closed in late ‘08 and reopened under new ownership shortly afterwards... The LA-based yogurt concept, Pinkberry, is expected to arrive in June on Cobb Parkway in the same shopping center with Hooters and Toys ‘R’ Us... Rising Roll Gourmet began in Atlanta in 1996 as Uptown Gourmet Sandwich Co. In January of this year, President Mike Lassiter, announced the expansion of the concept, Rising Roll Express, into office buildings, Universities, ariports and hospitals. Since the annoucement, franchisees Jerry & Bette Raburn have opened a unit at Monarch Plaza on Peachtree Road and another location has been added to the roster for a summer opening at 127 Peachtree Street in Atlanta... The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, planned for the former Macy’s space downtown, will be debuting later this year. Our original information from early ‘09 said, “the eatery will be a 138-seat, upscale Southern restaurant and music hall featuring live acoustic music.” The new joint will be sharing the space with Meehan’s Ale House that opened in March of ‘10... The Business Chronicle is also saying that Shaun Doty’s (Shaun’s Edgewood Social Club) new burger concept, Yeah! Burger, will be opening mid-May in the White Provision development on Howell Mill Road and that a second lease has been signed for a N. Highland location that’s expected in late 2010. Other rumblings around town are saying the N. Highland location is going into the former California Autobuff car detailer building at the corner of Virginia Avenue... Three new concepts are planned for the former Gorin’s/Orange Julius/Atlanta Bread Company space in the Peachtree Center Mall downtown at the corner of Peachtree Street and International Boulevard. Jack’s Sandwich Shop will take center stage with Bistro 7 and Momo Cafe flanking its sides. Jack’s was a mainstay in downtown Atlanta for many years originally opening in the Carnegie Building (now Hotel Indigo) back in ‘73 and later relocating to Peachtree in 1977. Jack’s was sold in 1991 and closed permanently in 1996. Robert Pasmanick, the former owner’s son, is reviving the business and will offer traditional deli fare as well as his famous cheese grits and a variety of salads. He hopes to be open in June. Bistro 7’s menu is rumored to be made up of Mediterranean sandwiches, salads, desserts and breakfast while Momo Cafe’s menu is described as soups, sandwiches and a full salad bar... Egg Harbor Cafe, established in Lincolnshire, Illinois in 1985, has leased a 3,900 sq. ft. space in the new development next to the St. Regis Hotel on W. Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead... Another lease has been signed for the former La Madeline space on Powers Ferry Road in Marietta. Rose and Crown will be a English Tavern, Pub and Sports Bar serving American fare with an English flair. There will be tons of TV’s, pool tables and a well stocked bar... Sia & Mitra Moshk (Sia’s in Duluth) have sold their Mitra Restaurant space on Juniper Street in Atlanta. Terri Schultz will be opening a new eatery soon at the location when Abrigo is introduced... Bella Restaurant & Lounge is looking at a mid-May opening in the former Pointe (and Encore) location on Old Norcross Road in Duluth in the McDaniel Square Shopping Center... Another source is saying Flying Biscuit franchisee Barbara Juhan is opening a second location in the Roswell/Alpharetta area in a former Artuzzi’s on Alpharetta Highway. Her new location will supposedly be modeled after the original Flying Biscuit in Candler Park and founder Delia Champion will oversee the decor. Juhan is anticipating a tentative May opening. Her first location opened a year ago on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs... March 29th may have been the final day for the Figo Pasta location on Virginia Avenue in Atlanta, but a new eatery is already in the works. Zach Kell, who owns the four-year-old Goin’ Coastal Seafood in Canton, will be opening a second Goin’ Coastal soon in the vacated space... Another source has a new business, The Wood Room, going into the former Over Da Edge space on Edgewood Avenue that closed in March of ‘09. We are following up but have not confirmed yet... We have sketchy info on a new Tavern, the Crazy Greek Tavern, possibly opening on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. This is the shopping center across from Lowe’s, just outside of I-285, that had Blue Plate Roadside Cafe in it. We are following up to see if the Tavern may be opening in that space? It was a Chicago’s location before Blue Plate... The Suwanee City Directory says Gabreil (Gabe) Morales will be opening Maracas Cantina in May on Town Center Avenue... Bradley Van Dyke, Celino’s Pizza & Wings, has applied for a license on Crabapple Road in the City of Roswell... Roark, an Atlanta-based private equity firm and parent of several restaurant brands including Cinnabon, Carvel, McAllister’s Deli, Schlotzsky’s and Moe’s Southwest Grill, has purchased the Wingstop company. Wingstop currently has three metro Atlanta locations and will most likely be an expansion market for the concept... Another source has a new unit of the self-serve frozen yogurt concept, The Yogurt Tap, opening in the White Provision development this summer, but local rumblings say a lease hasn’t been signed yet... We are following up on info that Old Ephraims Restaurant on S. Park Square in Marietta may be opening a second location in Vinings.... Kendall Harper is expecting to open any day now a new tea venture on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings Jubilee called TeaFuse, serving more than 50 varieties of tea, coffees and light bites... Joining Teafuse, the newly revamped, The Grape, was to also to reopen in Vinings Jubilee with extensive renovations to the main dining room & bar and the addition of a new full bar and new private dining as well. Executive Chef Paul Agnelii has created a new menu of bistro fare.

Chef Shuffle...

Food 101 has hired Ryan Smith as its new executive sous chef for the Sandy Springs restaurant on Roswell Road. Smith, 24, replaces Jordan Wakefield, who is now executive chef at Meehan’s Ale House. A metro Atlanta native, Smith began as a busboy and dishwasher at 16. He was most recently with Firewater Chop House in Cumming and has previously worked at both Watershed and The Grill in Decatur... Executive pastry chef, Chris Jennings, has left his position with Park 75 Restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel on 14th Street.

Ch, Ch, Changes...

FountainSide Cafe, located on Park Avenue at Centennial Olympic Park downtown, is being reconcepted and remodeled and is scheduled to reopen in June... This tidbit is from Frontera Mex Mex Grill’s website, “Frontera Catering is pleased to announce the acquisition of Atlanta Prime Catering, an upscale catering purveyor specializing in the flavors of international cuisine. We are immensely proud of the merger of our two outstanding catering operations. Further fulfilling out commitment of excellence, we welcome Atlanta Prime Catering into the Frontera Mex-Mex Grill family.”

Updates...

Back in March of ‘09 we had heard a few rumblings that Richard Blais may be opening a second location of his Flip Burger Boutique at the corner of Roswell Road & Piedmont in Buckhead. It’s been a year and the rumblings are back, saying Flip is indeed going in at that intersection in the Blockbuster that is closing on that corner. No word though on when it might be... Rick Seaman, John Frazier & Joe Ryan opened their Via Food Bar in the Eclipse Condos on Pharr Road in Buckhead back in August of ‘07. The ‘Italian-inspired’ eatery with a 50 ft. bar and custom ceramic oven is now listed for ‘Sale or Lease’ on a local restaurant broker’s website... It was recently announced that Legacy Property Group LLC is taking over the management of its restaurants (they had been on a contract with Concentrics Restaurant and it has expired). Brian Bullock (formerly with BrickTops) will be overseeing Max’s Coal Oven Pizzeria & STATS, both located on Marietta Street Downtown. Legacy property group was also involved in The Wine Loft that opened in June of ‘09 on Marietta Street, which has since closed... Sage Restaurant Group, The Glenn Hotels’ management company, will now also handle food and beverage operations at 30 Tables and 11 Stories, which were previously managed on contract by Concentrics as well... Faces Ultra Lounge, located at 1326 Cedar Grove Road in Conley, was destroyed by fire last month and no word yet if they will rebuild... Bobby & June’s Kountry Kitchen was calling it quits after more than 30 years at its 14th Street Midtown location. April 30th was to be the last day for the old knick-knack filled shack that seemed light-years from Midtown. Bobby & June Crowe served a meat-and-three menu daily since the 1960s and from time-to-time Bobby could be found on the front porch in a rocking chair playing checkers with one of his customers. Everyone from GA Tech coeds to high-powered Congressmen could be found amid the lunchtime rush. Latest info says the Crowe’s were so taken by the out pouring of folks who heard of the impending closing, that they have remained open.

Sign of the times...

Another 30+ year veteran, Mammy’s Kitchen on Memorial Drive, has indeed shuttered its doors. Mammy’s red & yellow cinder block building was an Atlanta icon. Country breakfast and hot lunches were their specialty featuring 21 different types of biscuits. The menu was displayed daily on dry erase boards proclaiming the breakfast items and meat-and-two lunches... The All American Tavern on Davidson Road in Marietta also called it quits, closing for the last time on Friday, April 30th... In February of ‘06, owner Andy Camp opened his third Spondivits location on Pharr Road in Buckhead. Two years later the location would close and Camp would file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy for Spondivits III, Inc. citing the major creditor, Spon-Divits, Inc. was owed $1,877,175. To follow would also be an issue with food poisoning at the original Virginia Avenue spot which may have escalated the problems. Court records now show that Spon-Divits, Inc. has also filed for bankruptcy, Chapter 11, citing the major creditor as Performance Food Group Miltons for $287,144. No word on what effect, if any, it will have on the remaining location in Cumming... This info is courtesy of the Wall Street Journal: Well-known pizza chain California Pizza Kitchen is on the auction block, according to people familiar with the matter. The restaurant chain has about 250 outlets in 32 states and nine foreign countries. Revenues dropped 5.8% during the fourth quarter of 2009. Ruckmann Rosser Sherrill, a well-known investor in restaurants, bought California Pizza Kitchen in 1997 from PepsiCo Inc. and took it public several years later... This from the New York Times: Burger chain Fuddruckers Inc. and its parent, Magic Brands LLC, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. None of the 135 franchisee-owned Fuddruckers restaurants are included in the filing. More than 200 restaurants operate under the Fuddruckers name. The company plans to close 24 of the corporate-owned Fuddruckers by April 30. Among the Atlanta closings will be locations at Northlake on LaVista Road in Tucker, Perimeter Center Parkway and Scenic Highway N. in Snellville. According to documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., Fuddruckers’ top unsecured creditors include food distributors US Foodservice Inc., owed $2.6 million, and Sysco Corp., owed $290,000... The metro area pizza chain, Ray’s New York Pizza, has had two closings in recents months on Mall of GA Boulevard in Buford and Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell... Merlot Restaruant operated on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek for five years before closing in late ‘07. Merlot would reopen some six months later moving into the former Backdrafts location on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwanee. The restaurant has now closed again and there is no word on possible new location or reopening... Owner Sandro Romagnoli shuttered the doors to the nearly two-year-old Figo Pasta Virginia Avenue (formerly Pad Thai) location on March 29th... Having been listed ‘For Sale’ since late ‘09, the Foster’s Grille on Buford Drive in Buford represented the last Foster’s in the state of Georgia and has ceased business... Maldives BBQ & Teriyaki opened in September of ‘08 on N. Druid Hills Road in the Toco Hills Shopping Center. The cozy spot served up chicken, beef and shrimp among many other dishes. Maldives has now closed and Zuma Sushi & Sake Bar has replaced it... According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, “Midtown’s One Peachtree Pointe building on Peachtree Street (home to La Pietra Cucina, formerly Mid City Cuisine) could be headed back to the lender as early as next month, according to a foreclosure auction notice. The 7-story office building, launched by former Georgia Tech quarterback turned real estate developer John Dewberry, is part of Peachtree Pointe, his office and retail project on the north side of Midtown. A foreclosure auction is set for May 3, according to the notice.”... There is a banner over the Universal Joint restaurant on Oakview Road in Decatur, saying ‘coming soon: Applebee’s.’ This was a former filling station before becoming Universal Joint.
For a complete list of closings, see Casualties on page 15.

CELEBRATING THE SURVIVORS- Page 8

12 years infusing Creole, Cajun with southern fare...

hud report staff

(As Atlanta moves-and-shakes into the next century, it often threatens to become too big, glitzy and impersonal for its own good. Too many businesses don’t even see a first birthday. the hudspeth report wants to recognize the nightclubs and restaurants that have become mainstays on this everchanging nightlife and cuisine scene. Monthly we feature venues that have not only survived, but have thrived.)

The Sycamore Grill was opened in 1998 by executive chef and owner, Paula Sims Ballard, in Stone Mountain Village offering fine dining in a casual, romantic setting. The restaurant is housed in a converted Charleston townhouse-style hotel (oldest building in Stone Mountain) dating back before the Civil War, circa 1836. During the War, Sherman spared it because it served as a Confederate hospital. A 150-year-old tree that blankets the veranda is the eatery's namesake. Ballard was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, where her culinary passion began as a little girl in her grandmother’s kitchen learning all the New Orleans favorites. Infusing a little Creole/Cajun flavor with Southern cuisine, appetizers at Sycamore ($5 - $14) range from seafood bisque, fried green tomatoes, sweet potato fries and hot crab & artichoke dip to Creole crawfish dumplings, sautéed snow crab claws, Maryland-style lump crab cakes, filet mignon skewers and the Sycamore sampler highlighting several of the items for $16. Salads ($7 - $14) include the house, spinach, Caesar, chicken and the kabob with roasted red peppers and grilled portabella mushrooms served on mixed greens with Danish bleu cheese crumbles, onion straws and grape tomatoes topped with your choice of grilled steak, chicken or shrimp and balsamic vinaigrette. Sycamore entree ($18 - $34) dishes offer Angus filet mignon, New Zealand rack of lamb, bone-in ribeye, schezwan pork loin, Bourbon brown salmon filet, pan seared sea bass, lobster tails, veal laffite, seafood risotto, blackened chicken, roasted duck breast, pecan encrusted chicken and the crab & shrimp Louise made with Maryland lump crab cakes paired with Gulf shrimp on a bed of angel hair pasta tossed in a light Creole garlic cream sauce. The Grill’s signature dessert is the angel food pound cake served with a fresh peach & blackberry coulis topped with fresh whipped cream. Other dessert choices include Key lime pie, banana pudding pie, gourmet bread pudding and vanilla bean ice cream ($2.50 - $10). Sycamore currently offers a prix-fixe 3-course menu nightly for $25 of (among many others) shrimp dumplings, fried green tomatoes, flatiron steak, lobster tail, pork loin, seafood risotto and the ‘chef choice’ gourmet mini parfait. In addition to the full service bar, they have an extensive wine list with wines from Australia, Italy, Napa Valley, South Africa and several other regions. There are also plans to open a Sycamore Retail Store soon, visit their website for updates. The Sycamore Grill is located at 5329 Mimosa Drive, Stone Mountain, 770.465.6789. Hours are 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday - Thursday, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. for Brunch and 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. for Dinner and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday. Final four...

Cheeseburger Bobby’s, the local fast casual gourmet burger concept, made its debut in the annual BurgerBusiness.com Burger Bracket Challenge for the first time and advanced to the Final Four. BurgerBusiness.com, a Web site hosted by food writer Scott Hume, is dedicated to everything burgers. It pits 64 of the top burger concepts (chains and independents) against each other in four regional divisions and concepts advance based on votes by the site’s readers. Although Cheeseburger Bobby’s was one of the smaller concepts, they proved to be a favorite by advancing four rounds to the Final Four. Along the way they defeated Culver’s, Krystal, Bill’s Bar & Grill and Burgerville, ultimately losing to Blanc Burgers + Bottles. “We were very excited to be included in the burger bracket challenge this year and were thrilled to make it to the Final Four,” explains Robert Stoll, co-founder and president of Cheeseburger Bobby’s. “Being a concept with five locations against some of the biggest chains, such as Burger King, Five Guys and In-N-Out, we were honored to be recognized as one of the favorite concepts. It shows there is a lot of loyalty connected with our brand.”
