•Abattoir ~ A 130-seat ‘meat-centric’ casual spot expecting to open the third week of May. This is the latest dining venture by the chef-owners Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison of Bacchanalia, Quinones at Bacchanalia, Star Provisions, Provisions To Go and Floataway Cafe. Abattoir will be located in part of the old meat packing plant in the White Provision development on Howell Mill Road. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday.
•Harold’s Chicken Shack ~ IL-based franchise opening on Edgewood Avenue next door to Noni’s at 357 Edgewood, near The Bureau.
•Sage on Sycamore space ~ New sign on the window of the Decatur Square location says, “coming soon, new concept, new owners.”
•RA Sushi Bar Restaurant ~ Restaurant Forum magazine had the 12th & Midotwn eatery listed as open in its April issue but the website says the Atlanta location will open summer ‘09. An unconventional dining concept, RA blends fresh sushi, hip music and contemporary décor all rolled up into one flavorful experience.
•Max’s Coal Oven Pizzeria ~ Concentrics Restaurants has announced the opening of its newest restaurant in late spring 2009 that features an authentic coal oven. Executive chef Nick Oltarsh brings New York-style pizza to downtown Luckie Marietta District. Max’s will be located next to STATS at 300 Marietta Street.
•The Firken & Lindbergh ~ This traditional English Pub is preparing to open June 1st at 565 Main Street in the Lindbergh City Center project. This is the second of five locations planned for the Atlanta area. The first opened in early ‘09 in the Avenue Forsyth in Cumming.
•Dickey’s BBQ Pit ~ Serving since 1941, Dickey’s already has locations in Watkinsville and Snellville and are opening new locations in Coweta County, Milton, Dunwoody, Alpharetta and East Cobb.
•Avellino’s Pizza Caffe ~ There’s a sign out front of former Silk Smoothie Shop on W. College Avenue in Decatur that say’s ‘coming soon,’ lunch, dinner, dessert, pizza, pasta, panini, salad, perfecto.
•La Fonda Latina ~ Opening their 5th location in late May or early June in the former Slice Pizza spot on Howell Mill.
•Midtown Diner ~ Opening in the long since shuttered Jock & Jills on 10th Street in Midtown. .
•Nonna Mia Pizzeria & Cafe ~ A sign on the front says ‘Opening Soon’ at 10th & Piedmont in the old Sweet Devil Moon location for this New Orleans-based eatery.
•Noche Tequila & Tapas Bar ~ Tom Catherall will open his 10th restaurant, Noche-Vinings, this month. It follows the concept of Noche in Virginia-Highland. The 4350-sq.-ft. restaurant will be in Vinings Jubilee and feature a 500 sq. ft. patio.
•Piola Peach ~ Slated to open in the 12th & Midtown development, this pizzeria from Italy with locations in São Paolo, Buenos Aires, New York and Miami’s South Beach features authentic thin crust, wood-fired brick oven pizza and Italian cuisine that is simple and healthy.
•Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint ~ Joining Meehan’s in the former Macy’s space downtown with live music and comfort food from Todd Richards of One Flew South. Richard’s is also said to be developing the Harmony Park Canteen concept in another undisclosed location.
•Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery ~ Known for it’s scantly dressed waitresses this Irish Pub franchise is opening in May in Johns Creek and another location has been announced for Villa Rica.
•Prickly Pear Taqueria ~ Has applied for a license for liquor, beer and wine consumption at 950 W. Peachtree Street.
•The Chocolate Bar ~ Is opening a second location: The Original Chocolate Bar Castleberry on Trinity Avenue in Atlanta.
•Twisted Taco ~ Will open it's fifth location this summer in north Buckhead on Wieuca Road, taking a space that has previously been Wieuca Tavern and Young’s Karaoke located adjacent to Fellini’s Pizza and La Fonda Latina. Construction has already begun on the extensive remodel.
•Fuego Mundo ~ Opening May in the Prado on Roswell Road. Website is not up yet, www.fuegomundo.com. So far you can follow the progress at twitter.com/fuegomundo. Evos, Fuego Mundo, Genki Noodles & Sushi, Starbucks and Taco Mac are all scheduled to open by summer in the Prado.
•L’Thai ~ Celebrating a Grand Opening on May 1st, Pithya Kongthavorn’s L’Thai West, arrives in Smyrna’s West Village replacing Yukaru Sushi & Steak. Expect another L’Thai in about 3 months in the former Brickhouse Pizza location on Alpharetta Street in Roswell.
•Gordon Biersch ~ The Brewery/restaurant is taking over the former Rock Bottom space on Peachtree Road in Buckhead and expects to open mid-July..
•Wonderful World of Burgers & Fries ~ With the first location opened in April in the former Fogao Gaucho space downtown, there are already plans for a second unit in Emory Village to open in August. Tin Drum founder, Stephen Chan, created the concept and says the downtown location has a simple menu and the upcoming Emory Village location will have more variety.
•d.b.a. Barbecue ~ Owner Matthew Coggin had this to say of the N. Highland spot: “We will be called, d.b.a. Barbecue. We will be a neighborhood restaurant featuring barbecue and Southern comfort food with a full bar and full service. d.b.a. Barbecue will be open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Look for us in late May 2009.”

Out of the oven...

Adios Cafe has opened inside No Mas! Hacienda & Cantina next to the patio serving Mexican coffee at the Walker Street location. You can try the classic Cafe de Olla, prepared in the traditional way with a touch of cinnamon and chocolate. Open early, open late, with empanadas in the a.m., handmade truffles, desserts, & other delights all day long. Unique coffees menu with espressos, Mexican hot chocolate, Atole, and many more... Seven Star Grill Arrived on the scene on Spalding Drive in Norcross serving Hawaiian fare. The only other Atlanta eatery we could think of that offers Hawaiian cuisine is Waikiki Hawaiian Barbecue on Briarcliff, which turns 3 this month... The folks at Figs & Honey Catering have opened Tiny Bistro on Marietta Street in the Midtown West area. They are serving gourmet sandwiches, freshly prepared sides and desserts from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., Monday thru Saturday. There is also a selection of fully prepared take-home entrees and side dishes. Menu will change seasonally.

Chef's Shuffle...

Lamplighter Cafe on Connally just never seemed to recover after a robbery during the Christmas holidays last year. Owner/chef Carmen Capello revised the concept and was to reopen as Shame Burgers in early ‘09. Shame never materialized and latest rumblings now say Cappello has left the city for his hometown in Philadelphia. A new concept, City Limit Cafe, is expected to open soon at that location... Chef Ken Bouche has left the kitchen at Richard Ullio’s fourth concept, Cuerno, on Juniper Street. Ullio is currently looking for a replacement.

Ch, Ch, Changes...

Indie Coffee, Books on W. Ponce de Leon Avenue has been sold and was to reopen after April 20th as a cafe without the books... Latest rumblings are saying Trackside Tavern in Decatur has finally received insurance money from the fire that destroyed the Tavern earlier this year and will begin the process to rebuild in the same location... Another fire casualty, RARE Soul Tapas Restaurant on Piedmont Avenue, has also begun renovations from a fire in early ‘08. Speculations say Rare will be reopening inside of 30 days but we haven’t confirmed yet... La Pietra Cucina, the progressive Italian eatery operating in the former Mid City Cuisine location on Peachtree Street, has a sign in the window that they will be closed from Sunday May 3 to Monday May 18 for renovations... Central City Tavern has relocated from it’s Peachtree Road address and has moved to a new location at 1801 Howell Mill Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30318 in The District at Howell Mill... After browsing throught the internet, we found The Chocolate Pink Pastry Cafe on Juniper Street is up for sale and the location includes an apartment... Although Larry Preston issued a formal press release that he was taking over Six88’s kitchen and reopening Vito Goldberg’s, the owner of Six88, Charles, has emailed us to say “they only talked about it, and it didn’t happen.”... Local rumores have Madras Chettinaad, located on Lawrence Highway in Decatur, moving to Alpharetta in May. Supposedly there will be a new owner and new cook... Hal’s On Old Ivy in Buckhead is movin’ on up by adding a second floor that is expected to be finished by mid-September. The new space upstairs will almost double the size of this popular eatery that’s been packing ‘em in for 20 years... The Edgewood Avenue location of Rolling Bones BBQ is reportedly ‘For Sale’ at $95,000 with a monthly lease at $3500 per month or buy the business, Real Estate and all equipment, furniture & fixtures for $695,000... Londzell’s Jazz & Blues is reportedly moving to a new home at 1570 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell.

Sign of times...

StarTime Entertainment, the huge entertainment complex on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell has closed. There is speculation the Comedy Club portion of the complex will reopen in another location... Java U Restaurant & Coffee Bar located on Mount Vernon Road in Dunwoody has also closed... Starbuck’s recently announced the locations that will be closing in Georgia. Here are the Metro area locations: Lenox Road at Peachtree Road -- 3393 Peachtree Rd. in Atlanta; • Atlanta Financial Center -- 3343 Peachtree Rd. in Atlanta; • Powder Springs and Macland --1721 Powder Springs Rd. in Marietta; • Panola Road -- 3068 Panola, Suite 1 in Lithonia; • Peachtree Inudstrial Boulevard at Howell Ferry -- 3631 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Duluth; • Tara Boulevard and McDonough -- 11256 Tara Blvd. in Lovejoy... In February Agnes & Muriel’s moved their 13-year-old Midtown eatery and relocated to Buckhead. Shortly thereafter the new space showed up online ‘For Sale’ and now seems to be closed altogether. The site says there is a new ‘drastic lower price,’ but no word on whether it will be sold or simply closed... Dusty’s BBQ near Emory was open for 27 years at the corner of Clifton and Briarcliff Roads. Apparently they have closed the restaurant portion but are expected to continue operating as a catering-only on Laredo Drive in Decatur.’

Travel & Leisure's latest issue includes a list of the '50 Best New U.S. Restaurants.' Among them is Atlanta's Holeman and Finch Public House on Peachtree, "Somewhat British, a little Mediterranean, soulfully Southern, and wholly awesome, this offal-centric, cocktail-fueled gastropub gets you hooked on the pleasures of headcheese, crunchy fried pigs’ ears, and bone-marrow gratin. Dinner for two $65."... In addition, Holeman and Finch, along with Dogwood in Midtown, also made Condé Nast Traveler’s 'Hot Tables List' for 2009... And, if that's not enough, Food & Wine magazine has added Holeman's chef and owner, Linton Hopkins (also owns Restaurant Eugene) to the roster of America's 'best new chefs'... Meanwhile, Playboy's latest edition loves Kevin Rathbun Steak: "Foodies know Kevin Rathbun as the guy who beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Atlantans know him as the owner of three killer dining spots located within a stone’s throw of each other. •Beginning in May at Dogwood Restaurant on Peachtree, food, fun and fate come together as Dogwood turns dining into a gamble with “Toss Up Tuesday and Thursday.” On these two days each week, diners in the bar area that order appetizers between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. will have a 50/50 chance of getting their food on the house. At the end of the guest’s meal before the check arrives, a Dogwood bartender flips a coin while the guest calls it, determining whether he or she must pay the bill or receives the appetizers free of charge. BYOB...

Wine lovers, as well as budget-wise diners, will now find it easier to bring their own wines to restaurants. The Dallas Morning News reports more restaurantss are accepting the practice in order to intice customers to dine. A new website has launched, www.GoBYO.com, with a surprisingly large number of Atlanta area restaurants permitting people to bring their own wine. Another trend being touted by glassware designers goes hand-in-hand with GoBYO, it's 'bring your own glass' as well. DesignsByLolita.com suggests your stemware is also an accessory.

Victory for the vino...

Concurrent with specialty market The Mercantile’s six month anniversary, the Candler Park shop is finally popping open a Pinot Noir in celebration of their winning battle. On Monday, March 16th, the Atlanta City Council passed an ordinance that puts specialty food shops into a special classification so they may acquire a liquor license to sell wine and beer. Shop owners, Janea Boyles and Samantha Enzmann, will be known as 'that shop' that opened doors for fellow and future business owners of Atlanta. A year long battle of meetings, petitions, community campaigning and good old-fashion banding together with other metro Atlanta specialty shop owners, sparked the win.

Kidney anyone?

Chef & co-owner Dan Krinsky of the Latin-American Tierra restaurant on Piedmont Avenue (404.874.5951), is on a mission. He has a genetic disorder that has left him in need of a new kidney. Visually floating...

The new Hotel Palomar in Midtown was scheduled to open on April 29th. A focal point is a 422-gallon visually 'floating' aquarium that is one of the largest public salt water tanks in the metro area. It is called a visually floating aquarium because it is positioned between two columns, which suspends it in the air. An assortment of tropical fish, including Regal and Yellow Tang and an Emperor Angel will greet Palomar guests as they enter the hotel.

Owner Joe McCarthy has announced the arrival of his new restaurant, WaterHaven in Midtown, opening on Tuesday, May 12 in the former GLOBE space. “I’ve enjoyed transforming the space into an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for Midtown residents and businesspeople in search of a quality meal,” says McCarthy, a 30-year food service industry veteran (a former Capital Grille, Houston’s executive). As quickly as Maxim Prime Steakhouse appeared on the downtown dining scene, the Jeffery Chodorow creation geared to the 20 - 34 demographic, disappeared March 1st with rumors of relocating to Buckhead. This month, Concentrics Restaurants has rescued the space and is opening its newest restaurant, 30 Tables, on Friday, May 1, in the vacant Glenn Hotel space. The restaurant launch coincides with the introduction of the rooftop space, 11 Stories, which was also re-designed under the direction of Concentrics’ restaurateurs Bob Amick and Todd Rushing. 30 Tables and 11 Stories are located in The Glenn Hotel at 110 Marietta Street, 404.469.0700. •Buckhead Pizza Co...
Buckhead Pizza Company, an upscale family-friendly pizzeria, has opened its third franchise location in two years on Peachtree Road in Buckhead. Despite the name, this is the first Buckhead location for the pizzeria that has other locations in Cumming and Buford. All three restaurants have a modern atmosphere and open layout, with a bar facing both the indoor dining room and the outdoor patio.
