Craft beer still 'star of show'
at new beer/cuisine concept

by hud report staff

The guys at Decatur’s Brick Store Pub (Dave Blanchard, Mike Gallagher and Tom Moore) have opened their latest concept, Leon’s Full Service, just around the corner at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Church Street in the old Rue de Leon space (originally a 1930’s gas station). Commemorating the occasion and helping two other Decatur venues recently damaged/destroyed by fire, Trackside Tavern and 5th Earl Market, Leon’s owners auctioned off Leon’s very first pint of Terrapin India Brown Ale to benefit the misplaced employees. According to Mike Gallagher the idea came from Daren Wang, one of the founders of the Decatur Book Festival and the first pint went for a jaw-dropping $2,650 to an anonymous (rumor says it was the owners of the Universal Joint & Steinbeck’s, Marc & Shelby Brennan) Oakhurst bidder who will have their picture, along with the first dollar made, framed and displayed forever at Leon’s. Leon’s Full Service is located at 131 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, 404.687.0500. Hours are Monday - Thursday 5 p.m. - 1 a.m. (kitchen closes at midnight) and Friday & Saturday 5 p.m. - 2 a.m. (kitchen closes at 1 a.m.). For more info visit STORY

Think you know Atlanta, huh?

by ron hudspeth

(So you want to be an Atlanta expert at the next party?)

I guarantee you can declare yourself a real Atlantan and stump ‘em with these gems about your city:

•Want to talk about potential gridlock. The November 1971 referendum by voters to build MARTA passed by only 461 votes.
•Cup of coffee: Oakland manager Tony LaRussa played in nine games with the Braves in 1971 as a 27-year-old second baseman and hit .286.
•Sweet Home Atlanta? Lynyrd Skynyrd was once the house band at a club on Peachtree called Funocchio’s.
•Horsepower (sort of): The first Atlanta transit system was made up of trolley cars pulled by 114 mules.
•I’ll take the tent: The original Atlanta Zoo came into being in 1889 when a building contractor named Thomas James bought animals and equipment from a bankrupt circus. Jones wanted the equipment but gave the animals to the city.
•Could it have been the cocaine? When Doc Pemberton first marketed Coca-Cola, it was called “The Ideal Brain Tonic” and Pemberton spent a whopping $73.56 on advertising the first year.
•Duck it’s Delta: Delta Air Service, from which Delta Air Lines eventually involved, was known for its crop dusting...FULL STORY

Williamson Bros. BBQ...

hud report staff

The Williamson Bros. BBQ business began 23 years ago in Talladega, Alabama. Brothers, Larry and Danny Williamson, watched their father, Jack, cook southern-style barbecue for his friends and family every Sunday night at the family farmhouse. Demand for the BBQ began to grow, so the brothers tapped into an opportunity and in 1986 opened a restaurant in Sylacauga, Alabama. By 1989 they had outgrown their space. Aware of opportunities in-and-around Atlanta, Georgia, the duo relocated to Roswell Road in Marietta, GA near the infamous Big Chicken. Williamson Bros. BBQ is located at 1425 Roswell Road, Marietta, 770.971.3201; 7040 Concourse Parkway, Douglasville, 770.949.5058; and 1600 Marietta Highway, Canton, 770.345.9067. FULL STORY
