In the oven...
(The following are but a small mention of the new places on our ‘Coming Soon’ radar...)

The Standard on Memorial Drive had tentatively closed and expected to reopen early March under new ownership and as a new concept, Young Augustine’s. The Standard’s website had this to say ~ “The Standard would like to thank Grant Park and Atlanta residents for their continued patronage and support. We are under a new ownership makeup and will be making exciting new changes over the next few weeks that will improve our ability to serve you better. Please check our website and Facebook page for updates on our progress. Thanks again, and we look forward to serving you again very soon!” According to Facebook, Kyle Faucher and Andy Gonzales would be revamping the space. Many of you may remember, bartender John Henderson, was shot and killed there last year... Most recent intel on the Sage Woodfire Tavern folks says they are expanding again in late April or early May in the former Indigo Joe’s (originally Buckhead Brewery) in Cumming with a seafood concept, Sage Fish Market & Tavern. They are also currently preparing to open Sage Woodfire Tavern Perimeter by March 15th in the former Houlihan’s space in Park Place. The original is located on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta... Latest rumblings around town have Chef Kevin Gillespie, along with his partners Nicolas Quinones and Bernard Moussa at Woodfire Grill on Cheshire Bridge, creating a new venue, a barbecue joint. This comes as no surprise since Gillespie’s stint on Bravo’s Top Chef last year showcased his many ‘culinary meatcentric’ talents as well as the beloved pig tatoo on his forearm. No word on when or where it will be yet... In ‘more burger news,’ Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting Tom Ryan’s Denver-based Smashburger chain is looking to open 3 metro locations before the end of 2010 and 30 locations locally overall. Smashburger uses 100% Angus beef that is ‘smashed,’ seared and seasoned on the grill and then placed on a butter-toasted artisan bun... Burger news part two: Chef Shaun Doty of Shaun’s Edgewood Social Club, along with partner Erik Maler, will be opening their latest burger concept soon, Yeah! Burger, in the former West Egg space in the White Provision development. Nation’s Restaurant News was reporting Doty had signed “two” new leases but didn’t give any details. Stay tuned for a possible second location or concept... The burger saga continues: Owners George Frangos and Jason Mann will be bringing their burger joint, Farm Burger, to W. Ponce de Leon in the former Viola space in Decatur, slated to open early April. The two also own Farm 255 in Athens and Farm Burger will be the sister operation. Here’s a portion of their statement for the Zoning Board in Decatur: “Our belief is that a great burger starts with exceptional beef from exceptional cows raised on sweet Georgia grass alone. With that guiding principle, Farm Burger’s ingredients will be 100% grass-fed, 100% locally grazed Georgia beef, 100% organic (or beyond). It starts with a $6 burger. From there we will offer a wide-range of seasonal accouterments, many grown on our 100-acre organic farm in Athens, Georgia, as well as diverse artisan cheeses, housemade pickles, local eggs and culinary delicacies, such as roasted bone marrow, house-cured bacon and charcuterie.”... The guys over at Tin Lizzy’s are looking to open their third location soon in the former Fuego Spanish Grill on Crescent Avenue in Atlanta. They have also announced the introduction of their newest concept, The Big Ketch Oyster Bar & Seafood Grill, that they hope to open either late April or early May in the recently shuttered nine-year-old Taco Stand on Roswell Road in Buckhead... Another proposed April opening will be the Loews Atlanta Hotel on Peachtree in Midtown. Chef Olivier Gaupin will be at the helm of the signature restaurant, Eleven, and libations will be served in Bar Eleven... We are looking into a rumor that a new restaurant, Phat Fish, is opening somewhere near East Atlanta Village at the corner of Fayetteville and Flat Shoals Roads... Steven Carse has his new venue, King of Pops, in the works for a March debut on North Avenue at the corner of North Highland in Atlanta. He will offer all-natural, handcrafted popsicles and shaved ice. Here’s a message from Carse via his website, “We will serve traditional paletas in addition to fun popsicle flavors with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients.”... Partners A. D. Allushi (most recently with the W Hotel Buckhead and Thrive) and Atlanta Hawks’ Zaza Pachulia (who also bought Eno in Midtown recently) are shooting for an April debut of their latest creation, Buckhead Bottle Bar, on E. Paces Ferry at Bolling Way in Buckhead. In the past the nostalgic space has been home to Che Tapas & Rum Bar, Blais Restaurant and happy hour hotspot of the ‘80s & early ‘90s, Peachtree Cafe... The 63-year-old Harold’s Barbecue on McDonough Boulevard in Atlanta has long been a smoked-meat, cracklin’ cornbread destination for those in the south. With the passing of founder Harold Hembree in September of ‘08, the decision was made to close a second location in Jonesboro, Georgia. But the latest buzz around the southside has another Harold’s spinoff opening this month on Highway 42 North in McDonough... Local restaurant designer, Restaurants Consulting Group, Inc.’s owner Tony Akly, is designing the space below his office in Sandy Springs for his sons Jonathan & Ryan’s new concept, 3 Sheets. At his son’s request, Akly is transforming the former Fishmonger space into a martini & cigar lounge which will feature live music and small plates and they are supposedly shooting for a mid-April opening... We are following up on information that a new concept called Bits & Pieces is opening at 1180 Peachtree Street. We don’t know yet if the two are related, but it is also the same address as Concentrics Restaurants’ Trois that closed in June of ‘09?... The former Restaurant 99 on Jonesboro Road in Forest Park will soon become home to Don Juan Mexican Food... The old Taco Mac on Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Tucker will be getting new life when Barlow’s Bar & Grill opens... Listed as ‘coming soon’ online, Capri Lounge will be going in on Gwinnett Drive in Lawrenceville... The AJC is reporting that Boston, MA-based Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, with locations in Boston & Foxborough, MA and Philadelphia, PA, is opening in Phipps Plaza in the fall of 2010... Fado Wine Bar is expected in the spring on Austell Road in Austell. No word yet if it is associated with the Buckhead Irish hangout, Fado Irish Pub?... With 11 locations throughout Metro Atlanta, Frontera Mex Mex Grill has announced the upcoming opening of another unit on Indian Trial-Lilburn Road in Norcross. Follow the progress for opening date at www.myfrontera.com... Another Mexican eatery, Cinco Mexican Cantina, is expanding yet again with a new Roswell location on Holcomb Woods Parkway. Other locations include Alpharetta, Cumming, Suwanee and the newest at Akers Mill which opened in October of ‘09... Another local source has William Allen saying he is opening an extreme sports bar and retro dance club on two levels in the former Tabu Boutique space at 3184 Roswell Road in Buckhead. Says he is shooting for a March opening? Another individual has applied for a license for a business called Altitude at the same address, but it was up for denial at a recent License Review Board meeting... We are also following up on information that John's Sports Bar & Grill may be opening in the former Boiling Pot location on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. This location was also previously brothers Charlie & Mark Wilson's On The Rocks Tavern and before that, the brightly colored, eclectic Bridgetown Grill... The former Pisces Seafood & Jazz/Coquettes Steakhouse building on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta has been sold along with the land, furniture, fixtures & equipment. The latter was open only nine months before shuttering the doors. We are anxious to see what new concept develops here... Creative Loafing is reporting that Inman Park resident Bob Sandage is looking at the Victor Kriegshaber House on Moreland Avenue possibly for a new brewpub. There are many hurdles yet to pass since this is a historic Victorian home. We will keep you updated... We are following up on info that Thristy Dog Tavern will be taking half the space vacated by Tony Larocco’s Vita last year on Peachtree Road at Bennett Street. Thirsty Dog will share the other half of the original space with Larocco’s Little Vita, a downsized version of the original he opened in the former Mick’s location back in 2008... The new bakery, Dulce Vegan, is expected soon in old renovated church on Boulevard in Atlanta. The new 100% vegan, organic bakery will offer completely animal-free products including scones, cupcakes and wedding cakes and cater to individuals with soy and gluten allergies.

Updates...

Far Coast Cafe, located on Baker Street in downtown Atlanta has closed for renovations and will reopen as Pemberton Cafe in the spring. The cafe was located between the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium at Pemberton Place and was the Coca-Cola Company’s new range of freshly brewed beverages. As part of an international launch of its new Far Coast brand, the cafe offered tea, coffee and infusions - brewed fresh by the cup... In 2009 Concentrics Restaurants launched three new restaurant concepts, the first outside of the South, in Chicago’s the Wit Hotel as well as managed the banquet facilities and room service. Located at the corner of State and Lake Streets, the 27-story hotel is at the epi-center of Chicago’s revitalized theater, hotel, retail and restaurant district. Concentrics has recently removed the venues from their website amid speculation the contracts have been cancelled... A local restaurant broker is advertising the fact that Grind House Killer Burgers’ (located inside the Sweet Auburn Curb Market on Edgewood Avenue) owner Alex Brounstein is on the hunt for “a cool, retro, hip space with outdoor seating in a hi-traffic, hi-visibility location with great lunch traffic.” The rumor is that the second location in either going to be downtown Decatur or the Cheshire Bridge/LaVista area and the goal is to finalize a space in the next 60 - 90 days and open by year-end... Latest update on STK —the hipster steakhouse chain with locations in West Hollywood, Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, Miami, and Vegas — comes from the Atlanta Business Chronicle. They are reporting STK will be opening in December of 2010 taking two levels of the building at 1075 Peachtree (part of the 12th & Midtown project) with a total of 12,000 sq. ft. STK will take the Peachtree Street side and another concept, STK OUT, which is more casual with burgers & fries, will take the 12th Street side of the space... Jenny Levison, owner of Souper Jenny, has gone mobile with the ‘Incredible Flying Soup Mobile.’ The repurposed van runs on propane and caters to community and school events featuring soups by the quart with entree casseroles... Restaurateur Chad Hullander, along with his wife Noreen, own Jefferson’s Restaurant in Rome, GA on Broad Street. The duo has recently opened a second location in the former D. Morgan’s on W. Main Street in Cartersville, GA... Chef Hugh Acheson of the Five & Ten and The National in Athens is now projecting a June debut of his Empire State South in a former Grape location on Peachtree in Midtown. It will be a community restaurant focusing on the food of the South as well as a meat-and-three with a coffee shop, bar and bocce court, offering, along with a selection of Bourbons, oyster pie, collard greens and hominy grits... Local bloggers are saying that almost a year after being destroyed by fire, Trackside Tavern on E. College Avenue in Decatur, will begin rebuilding in the spring... Croakers Seafood Restaurant & Java Jazz bar & Grill ~ We first listed this in May of ‘09 as two separate listings. We found a video on youtube that has both places opening in the same corner space of Boulevard & Edgewood Avenue in the former Power Plant space. The video says Croakers will be lower level offering ‘seafood & nouveau soul food,’ and Java Jazz on upper level. The video also mentions owner Kevin Anderson from the Croakers in Richmond, VA (www.croakersspot.com). As of our print date, we are still researching to see if the two materialize... More rumblings around town involving Edgewood & Boulevard, say the Top Flr (located on Myrtle Street in Atlanta) guys may be leasing space at Edgewood and Boulevard Roads in March for a new concept called 3rd Flr. It is rumored to feature a bar/lounge on a lower level and dining on a second level with a musical element and nightclub feel... Claire Bartlett, creator of Fusion Food & Wine Bar, has put her upcoming Cumming eatery on hold until another space can be finalized... We have not confirmed the date, but Stone Creek Tavern on Mall of Georgia Boulevard in Buford, will be making a move soon to its new home on Auburn Road in Dacula in the Mulberry Publix Shopping Center. Stone Creek Tavern replaced The Grill at Ivey Creek at the Mall of GA location in early ‘09.

Sign of the times...

Back in April of 2007 we reported a new, true five-star restaurant in a Mandarin oriental-style in the works at a new hotel project on Peachtree next to the Atlanta Woman’s Club, the Mandarin Oriental Luxury Tower. The new mixed-use hotel and condo tower was to be part of the 12th & Midtown project and cost $285 million. The hotel would include 198 rooms and 71 condominiums priced between $1.8 million and $15 million. The projected opening date was mid-2011. The development would have four restaurants and bars and its lobby will be on the 30th floor with panoramic views of Piedmont Park. Word came last month that the Mandarin has been foreclosed on... Cafe Cliche opened last year in the former Indie Coffee, Books space on W. Ponce de Leon in Decatur. There is now a note on the door saying they are ‘closed til further notice’ right next to another note from The Shumacher Group saying the space is available... Bill & Peggy Sharkey’s Louisiana-style restaurant, The Depeaux, located on E. Howard Street in Decatur has been listed on a local restaurant brokers site ‘for sale’ with an asking price of $99,000. The husband & wife team spent considerably more when they renovated the historic Decatur station to house their eatery in April of 2007. Most recent reports have the Sharkey’s closing during the week and open weekends-only... In late ‘09 Max & Erma’s Restaurants Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors in the U. S. Bankruptcy Court. The Max & Erma’s restaurant website no longer lists an Atlanta location and the number at the Mt. Vernon unit in Dunwoody has been disconnected. It opened March of 1997 and would have been 13 this month. There are still several locations dotted throughout the Northeast... Franchisee Chris Metzler opened his Fox’s Pizza Den in the Gwinnett market back in late ‘09 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. A local restaurant broker now has the Sugarloaf location listed ‘for sale’ for $139,000 stating the owner opened with no operating capital and business is not turning a profit... Owner Omega Angell has decided to close his five-month-old, Painted Table Cafe on Boulevard. He said farewell via Facebook: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, Painted Table Cafe is no longer in operation. We would like to extend our deepest thanks all of our incredible Grant Park regulars for making it an absolute joy to serve you the past several months. This decision was agonizing for us, as our heart and soul was poured in to everything we accomplished at the Cafe...” For a complete list of closings, see Casualties on page 14.

'Flip,' mud bugs & gluten-free beer on 5 Seasons menu

On March 3rd you have a chance to ‘flip’ for 5 Seasons Westide on Marietta Street in West Atlanta. The crew will be brewing up ‘flip’ drinks after 5 p.m. Flips were made during Colonial times and although historically there were many different variations of the Flip, it seems the best were made by mixing molasses, rum, eggs and an old stock ale. The publican would then heat the tankard in the fireplace or put a red hot poker right into the drink itself. Who can resist a beer made with a red hot poker? And, if you dress up like George Washington, 5 Seasons will buy you a Flip. On Saturday, March 20th, 5 Seasons will also be having a big ole time at both 5 North (Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta) and 5 Westside. It’s the first annual Mud Bug Festival (Mud Bugs are crawfish if you’re curious). They will have a big Crawfish Boil to celebrate crawfish season and the first day of Spring. It’s the Vernal Equinox, it’s a party with crawfish, alligator etouffee, zydeco music, beer and Hurricanes. One more (unique) thing, 5 Seasons has brewed a Gluten-free beer. They have a small batch at both North and Westside. In 5-style they brewed a real beer, a pale ale, that is pretty hoppy. In addition to that, from now on, every Monday night they will be featuring gluten free options on their specials menu, even making special gluten free batters for some fried foods.
