Ra Sushi Bar Restaurant...
...Joins Atlanta's Midtown Mile

RA Sushi, an upbeat, edgy sushi bar and restaurant, is making its Atlanta debut on June 8, 2009. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based company, Benihana Inc., will open its newest location on the ground floor of the 1010 Midtown condominium building at Peachtree and 12th Streets, amidst residences, hotels, restaurants and storefronts in Atlanta’s emerging Midtown Mile district. D.B.A. Barbecue was to open after Memorial Day pending final inspections in the space formerly occupied by Vine Restaurant. D.B.A., which is a take-off on “doing business as,” will be a casual neighborhood restaurant featuring barbecue and southern comfort food with a full service bar. D.B.A. will be open for dinner initially and within two months of opening will serve lunch, weekend brunch and also offer catering. Matt Coggin, who has worked in the neighborhood for over ten years, will be the managing partner. Matt has preciously worked at Harvest, La Tavola, Wisteria, Sala and Kevin Rathbun’s Steak. Matt joined forces with James Ehrlich of Eclipse di Luna to create the new concept for the Virginia-Highland dining scene. The third partner, Lee Coggin, ASID, designed and remodeled the former Vine space to give it a totally new look. Doug Morgan, previously the pit master for Jim ‘N Nicks BBQ in Birmingham, Alabama will be the creative force in the kitchen... Latest sources have CentraArchy’s Jerry Greenbaum (NY Prime, Tavern at Phipps, Joey D’s, etc...) taking over the former Clubhouse space at Lenox Square to open Lenox Square Grill serving breakfast and comfort food 24/7 sometime this fall... In Cheeseburger Bobby’s news it seems an agreement has been signed to open in Johns Creek by this summer and Acworth by next summer by brothers Rob and Eric Heidt. The Canton location (the franchises 4th metro Atlanta location to open) is owned by franchisees Bob and Carol Burton... Local blog, Repeat Atlanta, has uncovered info on the new W. Peachtree Street concept Prickly Pear Taqueria: “Prickly Pear will open this week in Plaza Midtown and will feature a menu similar to Tin Lizzy’s and slightly lower in price than The Original El Taco. The eatery is taking roughly half of the former Amore space which gives them a second level of lounge-style seating. Prickly Pear will also have an entire wall of various tequilas on the main level bar. The eatery will feature some green aspects such as refurbished Delta Air Lines seats from a decommissioned Boeing airplane. They have also utilized lettering from old airport signage, the letters “P, P and T” to represent Prickly Pear Taqueria from the rebranding of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport years ago... Tula’s Lounge on Mitchell Street downtown was waiting for its liquor license as we went to print. Tula’s is expected to open soon offering breakfast, lunch, a Saturday brunch, nightly entertainment and a tapas bar... 946 South at 946 Canton Street in Roswell has a message on the North Fulton Shops website saying they are opening a Mexican Taqueria just across the street from 946 South... Suite has applied for a license to operate a bar with customer dancing and live entertainment at 933 Peachtree Street in the Metropolis condominiums. Suite is to be a modern lounge featuring a menu of sophisticated bites and cocktails in an ultra modern setting... Restaurateur Andy England has taken over the former Saba space on Sycamore Street in Decatur and will be introducing a new concept to the space, Dick Mack’s Irish Pub... Another source has a new place going in at 33 Buford Village Way in Buford called Rick Tanner’s. You may remember Rick from Tanner’s Rotisserie many years back... We had originally reported Antica Posta might possibly be opening another location in the former SAGA, Staley Grace space on Crescent Avenue. Sources are now saying the new eatery will be Joia Restaurant & Lounge and will feature dancing and live entertainment... Evos Atlanta, a healthy version of fast food burgers, fries, etc., has two new locations opening soon, Evos Viewpoint on Peachtree Street next to the Viewpoint condos and Evos Prado in the Prado Shopping Center on Roswell Road. SKS Healthy Foods is a master developer of Evos franchises and has agreed to build a minimum of locations in North Carolina and metro Atlanta in the next five years... Vice nightclub is rumored to be going into the former Royal Nighclub location on Trinity Avenue downtown... Ria Pell (Ria’s Bluebird Diner) and partner Stephen Gannon are preparing a new Americana/dinner concept, Sauced Atlanta, for the old 11:11 Tea House space on Edgewood Avenue in Inman Park... We haven’t confirmed it yet, but rumor says the 32-year-old Havana Sandwich Shop, which closed in late ‘08 due to fire, may be re-opening again in Buckhead a little further North of its original Buford Highway location. Oddly enough, a second location had opened early September ‘08 on Marietta Highway in Canton just before the original location burned... City Limit Cafe was expected to open in May in the former Lamplighter location on Connally Street in Grant Park offering wings & burgers... Another Buffalo Wild Wings is said to be opening soon in the former Ali Oli space at 3535 Peachtree Road.

The Station House Restaurant has opened in the Cumming Station mixed-use development on Tribble Gap Road in Cumming... The new Studio Bar and Lounge in the newly renovated Artmore Hotel (formerly Best Western Granada Suites) on W. Peachtree is a hip and contemporary lounge space offering wine & signature cocktails in a comfortable modern setting... Total Wine & More has launched its third Atlanta location on North Point Circle in Alpharetta with a 20,000 square foot store that carries 8,000 varieties of wine and 1,000 varieties of beer... California Pizza Kitchen has opened another location in the Forum on Peachtree Parkway in Norcross... The Boiling Pot has opened in the former On The Rocks Tavern on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs... McGowan’s Oakhurst Pub and Wine Merchant is the new sister venue next door to Palate Cafe & Wine Bar on W. Hill Street in Decatur. Serving comfort food in a casual Oakhurst enclave meant to evoke the experience of a Sunday lunch or supper at home. It’s rumored that the restaurant space across from Parish on N. Highland Avenue is leased but is under wraps as to who is coming in... It’s also rumored that Soho in Vinings may be taking over the former Zaria Cafe space in Vinings Jubilee on Paces Ferry Road and will be serving sandwiches and such... Londzell’s Jazz & Blues has moved from 2300 to 1570 Holcomb Bridge Road and is now known as Londzell’s Martini Lounge... Latest source says Buckhead Life’s new 3344 Restaurant will be called Niko’s after the director of operations, Niko Karatassos. It will be a nearly 9,000 square foot signature restaurant for the street level of the 3344 Peachtree Boulevard building which will open onto the new pedestrian-oriented Peachtree Boulevard project... Yet more rumors say a new concept is ‘coming soon’ from Andy Alibakhsh, owner of Apres Diem and Carpe Diem and Arnaud Michel, owner of Anis Cafe & Bistro to the former Allegro space on Dutch Valley Road... Latest rumblings are saying Cantina Laredo and III Forks, who were reportedly slated for the Terminus 200 building in Buckhead, may be delayed from the proposed Fall ‘09 openings. Owned by Dallas-based Consolidated Restaurant Operations Inc., III Forks is an all-prime steakhouse and Cantina Laredo has gourmet Mexican fare. They would be joining other restaurants at Terminus, including AquaKnox, BrickTops, The Flying Biscuit Cafe, LOLA Bellini Bar & Restaurant and MF Buckhead... Sam Huff & Dave Poe of Sam & Dave’s BBQ, have decided to split up — though still friends, the two have decided Huff will take BBQ1 on Lower Roswell Road in Marietta and Poe will take BBQ2 on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, calling it Dave Poe’s BBQ, but with the same menu... La Pietra Cucina, which opened late ‘08 in the former Mid City Cuisine location in Midtown, had closed briefly last month for renovations and has now reopened with a totally different look... Ann’s Snack Shack, located at 1615 Memorial Drive and home to the best burger in America (the Ghetto Burger) per the Wall Street Journal, is ‘for sale.’ 37 year owner Ann Price told the AJC that she’s ready to sell and want’s the restaurant on the market by the end of the month... There is also an online ‘for sale’ listing at $325,000 for East Side Lounge on Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta.

Chefs shuffle...

Kozmo Gastro Pub on Douglas Road in Johns Creek has added Denise Leighton as new sous chef... Shane Devereux (most recently with Peasant Bistro) is now the new Chef at Top Flr on Myrtle Street in Atlanta... Rumors had Adam Biderman leaving Holeman & Finch Public House on Peachtree at the end of May to move to New Orleans... Chef Tony Seichrist, formerly with Serenbe’s The Farmhouse Restaurant is now with the Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island in South Georgia.

Sign of the times...

Back in April we reported Button Cakes Bakery had moved into Viola Market Cafe on W. Ponce de Leon Avenue. At print time we were waiting to hear back, but it seems Viola has shuttered their doors and Button Cakes is back online,, only.. Lulu Blue, which opened in June of ‘08 on Virginia Avenue in a former cigar shop, serving hummingbird cupcakes, jasmine tea chocolates and other treats has closed... 4-year-old Little Alley Tapas Bar & Restaurant on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell was rumored to be closing in a couple of weeks. Little Alley is the sister restaurant to Red Salt that opened last year... Star Diner, which opened in late ‘07 in the former Goodfellas Pizza behind Garrison’s on State Bridge Road, is also closed... Au Bon Pain located at Ivan Allen Plaza is no more. Now only one remains at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The first location closed a few months back in Atlantic Station. Last month, the landlord ordered all items out of the Ivan Allen space and put on the street. The eatery was in the Southern Company building at the corner of Ivan Allen and West Peachtree... U Restaurants’ contemporary Spanish concept, Cuerno eatery, closed recently after never achieving the sales figures it needed. Founder Riccardo Ullio opened it in January of ‘08 on Juniper in midtown next door to its sister restaurant Beleza. Another of Ullio’s restaurants, Fritti, is believed by many of having the best pizza in the city... Sadly, owner Karen Bremer of downtown Atlanta dining landmarks Dailey’s and City Grill restaurants, closed the doors for good after economic conditions have worsened.

The latest dining venture by chef-owners Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison of Bacchanalia, Quinones at Bacchanalia, Star Provisions, Provisions To Go and Floataway Café, has opened in the newly renovated White Provision complex on Howell Mill. Abattoir Chophouse opened on May 21st, 2009 offering a 150-seat ‘meat-centric’ casual atmosphere. Abattoir (French for ‘slaughterhouse’) is located oddly enough in what used to be Atlanta’s old meatpacking district in a converted space of the former plant. The interior is bounded by eggshell colored brick walls with tall windows and high, open-beamed ceiling. The space is modern with understated décor, yet somehow earthy with rustic touches. A granite-topped full-service bar greets you at the entrance and there is seating in the main dining area as well as outside patio, complete with fireplace. Fuego Mundo...
Fuego Mundo, a South American wood-fire grill concept, is expected to join the mix at the Prado on Roswell Road June 5th, 2009. It all started on a trip to Central/South America in 2008. Udi Hershkovitz and Masha Hleap-Hershkovitz stopped by a restaurant in Panama City, Panama while on a tour of the Panama Canal and that’s where it happened. The vision for Fuego Mundo was born: A place to enjoy the flavors, spices, culture and wines of South America. Fuego's eclectic interior will showcase South American art, wine tastings, rare Latin music and an international staff, including the Manager Manuel from Colombia. •The Firkin & Lindbergh...
At press time, The Firkin & Lindbergh was preparing to open June 1, 2009 on Main Street in the Lindbergh City Center project. This is the second of five locations planned for the Atlanta area. The first opened in early ‘09 in the Avenue Forsyth in Cumming. The Firkin is a traditional English Pub that expands on dishes (less than $15) like traditional beer-battered fish and chips, cottage pie, bangers, beans & mash, Guinness steak and mushroom pie, cabbage pesto, cream pasta and shepherds pie. Not to mention American dishes like sliders, Angus burgers and half-pound hot dogs. The Pub will also have several salads and vegetarian dishes as well. Back in 1994, three guys were driving around Florida in a hot car, craving burgers and fries, but dreading the aftershock the greasy, not-so-healthy burgers and fries would wreak on their systems. A few miles down the road, the idea for EVOS was born. They still didn’t have a place for lunch, but they had a new idea about low fat, fast food eating that spread like ketchup. Colorado-based, Qdoba Mexican Grill, will open its fourth Atlanta area location on June 9th in Alpharetta. Qdoba is a subsidiary of Jack in the Box and other Metro locations include Suwanee, Ponce de Leon in Atlanta and Concourse E at Hartsfield-Jackson airport. The first unit opened in Denver in 1995. Qdoba mixes fresh ingredients with a combination of sauces, salsas and marinades to create non-traditional, fast-casual Mexican fare. With several locations rumored for the Metro Atlanta area, Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, will soon be opening its first franchised location in the Johns Creek area. The original opened in 2003 inside the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. •an evening honoring kaedy...
At the end of May, Vikki Locke of B98.5, Melissa Carter of Q100, Mara Davis of 92.9, Cynthia Young of KISS 104.1 and Jordan Graye of B98.5, hosted a sold out event honoring their friend and colleague, Kaedy Kiely of 97.1 FM. Kaedy was diagnosed this spring with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. Since then, she has had surgery and will now undergo chemo and radiation treatment. The event held at the Ansley Park Playhouse, was a wine and dessert reception followed by a performance of the comedy, “A Sunday Afternoon at Loehmann’s” written by “Peachtree Battle playwrights, John Gibson & Anthony Morris. The evening raised over six thousand dollars for the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. The Ladies of Radio presented Kaedy with the Phoenix Award from the City of Atlanta, stating Kaedy’s contributions to the city over the past 20 years on Atlanta’s airways. Fellow breast cancer survivor, Monica Pearson, sent a touching note about her own battle with breast cancer along with one of her personal wigs, should Kaedy need it. Ted Turner, chairman of Ted’s Montana Grill, and President/CEO George McKerrow Jr. handed over the keys to a new Toyota Prius recently to Burger FANatics contest winners Leslie and Josh Borger in front of Ted’s Montana Grill headquarters on Luckie Street in Atlanta. The Borgers, who submitted a witty video called “Couple on a Bison Budget,” expressed their love of Ted’s burgers by coming up with innovative ways to eat at Ted’s. pacci arrives...
The new Italian steakhouse, Pacci Ristorante, opened recently at the corner of W. Peachtree and 7th Street in Midtown next to Hotel Palomar. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and also features a stylish rooftop bar and lounge area called AltoRex Terrace Bar. The menu offers rustic Old World fare of Northern Italy created by executive chef Keira Moritz, formerly of Puccini & Pinetti in San Francisco. dining out for life...
Diners filled popular restaurants and cafes throughout metro Atlanta in support of Open Hand back in April. Restaurants participating in the 17th annual Dining Out for Life donated a minimum of 20% of food and beverage sales that day to Open Hand. Open Hand expects to raise more than $200,000 this year. The proceeds help continue to provide home-delivered meals and nutrition services to senior citizens and individuals with chronic and debilitating diseases. Visit for more info. share out strength raises $715,000...
The 21st anniversary celebration of Share our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Atlanta raised $715,000 at it’s gala event in May. Approximately 850 people gathered at the Georgia Aquarium for the food and wine event that featured samplings from more than 50 of the city’s top chefs, as well as live and silent auctions, wine tastings and live entertainment. All of the net proceeds from Taste of the Nation Atlanta help fund the development of Share Our Strength’s strategy to end childhood hunger in Atlanta with the continued support of organizations, such as the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Project Open Hand and Genesis, A New Life. Local newscaster Fred Kalil (from left) served s Master of Ceremonies and music icon Kenny Rogers and his wife Wanda served as honorary chairpersons. Pano Karatassos (center), founder of the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, started the Taste of the Nation Atlanta event in 1988 and has chaired the event each year since. He was joined this year by Laurent Tourondel, executive chef and partner of BLT Restaurants, including BLT Steak in Atlanta, who served as honorary chef.
