With locations on Piedmont Road in Buckhead and Memorial Drive in Grant Park, Tin Lizzy’s Cantina & Taqueria is anticipating a March 2010 date for the opening of their 3rd Metro Atlanta spot on Crescent Avenue in the former Fuego Spanish Grill space. Looking ahead, Marketing & Catering Director Kim Junod, says they are also considering a Vinings location if a great space opens up... The President of Rising Roll Franchising Co., Mike Lassiter, is ‘rolling’ out condensed versions of his original Rising Roll Gourmet concept, Rising Roll Express, and plans to put them in airports, office buildings, universities and hospitals. Another unit is planned by the end of this month, January 2010, for the Monarch Tower in Buckhead (the first is on New Northside Drive in Atlanta). Rising Roll gourmet began in Atlanta in 1996 as Uptown Gourmet Sandwich Co... The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting partners Joe Romano, John Givney and Tim Langell of Zucca Bar & Pizzeria are also working with Mike Lassiter (Rising Roll) of Franchising Concepts LLC to franchise their concept. They currently have locations in Smyrna, Decatur, Kennesaw & Town Lake... The former Little Azio’s location on Chastain Road in Kennesaw will transform in March into the 7th Metro area Ray’s New York Pizza... Digger’s Sports Bar resided on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs for several years before shuttering its doors in early ‘09. The space has been completely transformed and will reopen in January as Foxy’s Sport Bar & Chop House promising ‘great food, fine cigars, wine, cognacs, a live DJ and nightly live entertainment.’... With two locations in Smyrna, owner Vipel Patel is bringing his U. S. Cafe concept street level in the bottom of Lindbergh Vista Apartments at Lindbergh Plaza in February. This is the space Crescent Moon was originally supposed to take... Ponte Vedra Beach, FL-based Healthy Way Cafe will be making its Atlanta debut sometime in the first half of 2010 in the Decatur area. Healthy Way touts itself as the ‘first ever all natural and organic, fast casual restaurant.’... According to the Jacksonville Business Journal, 40-year-old Jacksonville, FL-based Orange Tree Hot Dogs is expanding and Atlanta is listed as one of the markets. Director of franchising, Shawn Emling, expects locations to open in 2010. The average size of an Orange Tree is 1,400 square feet and the average number of employees is seven to 10... Highland Bakery, located in the Old Fourth Ward on Highland Avenue, is opening a second location in Midtown on Peachtree Street in the Spring... The folks at Prickly Pear Taqueria, which opened in July of ‘09 on W. Peachtree Street in Midtown, are taking the rest of the former Amore space it moved into and adding another concept, Pie 950 Pizza Tavern. The new Tavern is scheduled to open in the next 30 days and will feature subs, pizza, calzones and gelato among many other items... Michael Rabb is expanding his Corner Tavern empire with the opening of his fourth, the Midtown West Corner Tavern on Huff Road in Atlanta. Others include the East Point Corner Tavern, the Edgewood Corner Tavern and Little 5 Corner Tavern.

Updates...

Chef Hugh Acheson of the Five & Ten and The National in Athens is expected to bring his culinary art to Midtown in April when he opens Empire State South in a former Grape location on Peachtree. It will be a community restaurant focusing on the food of the South and will be a meat-and-three restaurant with a coffee shop, bar and bocce court along with a selection of Bourbons, to oyster pie, collard greens and hominy grits... Acworth’s Paisanos Pizzeria (opened June ‘07) on S. Main Street is under new ownership and will soon change its name and concept to Abbondanza (meaning ‘abundance’) Pizza, Pasta, Wine... Although Dave & Buster’s purchased the Jillian’s space at Discover Mills on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville four years ago, they have only recently renovated and rebranded the space with the Dave & Buster’s name... The Funny Farm Comedy Club is back in business operating out of Andretti’s Indoor Karting & Games on Alpharetta Highway in Roswell. Offered along with the laughts is a full-service bar as well as standard pub grub... The Westin Hotel on Peachtree Street had temporarily closed the Sun Dial Restaurant Bar & View in order to replace all the windows destroyed by the tornadoes of 2007. Current plans are to reopen the Sun Dial on January 29, 2010... Word on the street is that Chef Tomohiro Naito hasn’t decided yet if he will be closing his original Tomo Japanese restaurant in Vinings once his new location, Tomo’s Sushi, has been completed on Peachtree Road in the Ritz-Carlton residences in Buckhead... On the heels of Debbie Benedit (Eddie Benedit’s widow) reopening the Havana Sandwich Shop (that was destroyed by fire in ‘08) on Buford Highway last month, another Benedit has sent out a notice about his plans to resurrect the same concept just up the road. William Benedit wrote that he had originally worked with his dad, Guido ‘Papi’ Benedit, and brother, Eddie Benedit, at the Buford Highway restaurant in 1976. He left the business some years later and decided to return in 2009. He has conceded the eatery’s name to Debbie and will be opening in late January just up the road at the entrance of the NE Plaza Shopping Center on Buford Highway as Havana Grill. May the best Cuban sandwich win.

More updates...

Nirvana Cafe & Grille, located on Crabapple Road in Roswell has closed. It has been sold and will reopen as another concept in 2010... In September of ‘09 Vapiano Pasta Pizza Bar was on our list of ‘coming soon’ with franchisee Blake Kolo (a Detroit-based certified public accountant) looking for two locations in Atlanta (Virginia-Highland & Buckhead). Vapiano is a European concept serving made-to-order fire roasted pizzas, house-made pasta and hand-tossed gourmet salads. As of our January 2010 print date, the corporate website still had the two Atlanta locations listed as ‘In Development.’... Three Dollar Cafe on Peachtree Parkway in Cumming was purchased back in September by General Manager Terry Handley and plans were to rebrand as a Black Diamond Bar & Grill. (There is another location rumored for W. Peachtree Street in Atlanta but we have not confirmed if Handley is involved in both). Handley has recently applied for his pouring license in Forsyth County and should be opening soon... It’s been a year since we announced Meehan’s Public House was going into the former Macy’s space on Peachtree downtown. Originally expected in November of ‘09, there are now signs that the new pub may be opening soon... Also joining Meehan’s in the space, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, is expected in the spring. The owner is Global Concessions Inc., a longtime airport restaurant contractor. They operate 12 restaurants at Hartsfiled-Jackson. Sweet Georgia’s will be a 138-seat upscale Southern restaurant and music hall featuring live acoustic music... Atlanta Magazine is reporting that JCT Kitchen owner & chef, Ford Fry, may be looking into opening a Mexican concept as his next venture... In June ‘09, rumor had it that STK—a hipster steakhouse chain with locations in West Hollywood, Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, Miami, and Vegas—had signed a lease to open a spot at 1075 Peachtree, the office building under construction as part of the 12th & Midtown project. As of this issue, still no STK.

Cha, Cha, Changes...

Change over at the 30-year-old Johnny’s Hideaway on Roswell Road in Buckhead, comes in the form of the General Manager of 12 years, Chris D’Auria (longtime owner Mike Dana’s son) taking ownership of the nightclub dynasty. Oddly enough we found this Hideaway ad from the 1981 November issue of Atlanta Magazine and the information still pretty much holds true today (minus Esposito who has been gone for some years and updated music)... This winter, Cafe Circa is entering its own new season. The upscale eatery in the Old 4th Ward has a new chef as well as a new menu. Chef Joey Zelinka has been named Executive Chef after working at restaurants including TAP, Parish and Rathbun’s... Here To Serve Restaurants also has a few changes: Chef Phillip Strange, formerly with Lola Bellini Bar (to become Cantina mid-January) is moving to Shout restaurant in Colony Square Midtown. Chef Julio Castillo will move from Shout to the new Cantina in the Terminus building in Buckhead. Leigh Allan will be Cantina's GM and Chet Huntley (formerly with Lola) will become GM at another Here To Serve restaurant, Home Restaurant & Bar on W. Paces Ferry in Buckhead. Quentin Donnaud, formerly at Craft restaurant will join Huntley as the new Executive Chef at Home... Chef Eli Kirshtein, who you may recall from last season’s Top Chef on Bravo, has announced he is taking a temporary position at Solo Restaurant in Manhattan and is leaving ENO in Midtown mid-January... Don Hose Mexican Restaurant on Atlanta Road in Cumming has closed after only a year in business and will reopen soon as Mama’s Breakfast.

Rumblings...

Jasmine’s is said to be the name of the new restaurant going into Loews Atlanta Hotel in Midtown. It’s expected in the spring at 1075 Peachtree Street... Latest rumor around town says the folks behind Holeman & Finch Public House are opening a liquor store and it will be called, Bottleneck. The former Repast barista and one of the H&F owners, Andy Minchow, is rumored to be runing the new store. No word on an address yet... Recent rumblings around town have Dallas, TX-based Genghis Grill The Mongolian Stir-Fry possibly expanding into Georgia. There is no mention yet on the website, www.genghisgrill.com or current addresses for Atlanta... Several sources have postings that say the Top Flr (Myrtle Street) guys may also be leasing the space over the Over da Edge Restaurant at Edgewood and Boulevard Roads... There is construction going on in the former New Orleans Connection space on Spring Street in Smyrna and speculations are that it may be a Bakery of some sort... We are following up on a rumor that Busy Bee Cafe may be moving to a nearby location in early 2010. They have been at their current location on MLK, Jr., Drive since 1947. We’ll keep you posted... Other sources have mentioned that Dynamic Dish on Edgewood Avenue will be expanding in the spring and will be adding liquor/beer/wine and a semi-standard menu (the menu currently changes daily).

Sign of the times...

Metrotainment Cafes shuttered the doors of Garrison’s Broiler & Tap on Medlock Bridge Road in Duluth, December 31st, 2009 after over 10 years at that location. Speculations are that there were differences with the landlord regarding the lease that had expired... Lola’s Cantina on Lower Roswell in Marietta opened in June of ‘09 -- This is their final email: “As we thank you for a wonderful year, and wish you the best of the new year to come, we regret to say goodbye.” December 31st was their last night... A mainstay on Cobb Parkway in Marietta for what seems like an eternity, Scalini’s Italian Restaurant had expanded several years ago with another location on Johnson Ferry. Although Cobb Parkway is still up-and-running, December 31st served as the last night for the Johnson Ferry spot in Marietta... The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported recently that The Mansion on Peachtree at 3376 Peachtree Road was being served a foreclosure notice. The Mansion is home to Neo, the in-house restaurant, which announced in June of ‘09 that ‘as a sign of the times,’ it was going ‘casual with light, farm-fresh fare.’ And, there’s no mention of Tom Collicchio’s Craft restaurant that also calls The Mansion home and what its future may be? According to the project’s developer the 30-day foreclosure notice was expected to be advertised on January 5, 2010. Mansion Centre Development, LLC along with City Centre Properties LLC, own the project. Clark Butler is the President and John Williams, founder of Post Properties Inc. is a major investor as well as Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank... The flagship location of Justin Smolev’s salad eateries, Dressed on W. Peachtree in Midtown, is the last one standing as 2010 begins. Both his Buckhead location in the Terminus building and Perimeter location on Hammond Drive closed their doors for good in mid-December ‘09. No word on the fourth location listed on the website, Hong Kong, as to when it will open, if at all.
