Atlanta chef, Scott Serpas will soon open his first restaurant, Serpas, at The Pavilion at Studioplex in the Old Fourth Ward district. Slated to open mid-January, Serpas will be located in the heart of the neighborhood featuring cuisine that is true to its origin handcrafted by the New Orleans native. Serpas will be located at The Pavilion at Studioplex in the historic Old Fourth Ward at 659 Auburn Avenue, 404.688.0040. The Georgia Restaurant Association recently named veteran Atlanta restaurateur Anna Hsu (Hsu’s Pacific Rim, Silk) its 2008 Restaurateur of The Year (See Photoplay Page 7 for details)... Historic Paschal’s restaurant in Atlanta (originally on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive) was considered the “unofficial headquarters of the Civil Rights Movement.” The restaurant was patronized by several in the Civil Rights movement from Reverend Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams, John Lewis and A. Phillip Randolph to many more. One of the founding members, 88-year-old James Paschal, passed away during heart surgery on Friday, November 28th, 2008. Today, Paschal’s is located several blocks from the original location and also has two locations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport... In the mood for a deadly snack? Of 12 restaurants in the United States certified to serve the poisonous fish toro fugu (Tiger Blowfish), one is right here in Atlanta, Yasu Japanese Bistro, on Peachtree Parkway in Suwanee. Chef Yasutaka Kawamura (formerly with MF Sushi) prepares tora fugu by reservation-only, that has been processed in Japan and shipped in. The folks at Sage Woodfire Grill on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta have opened their latest eatery, The Diner at North Point, in the former Checkered Parrot nearby on Mansell Road. Goodness ~ A health food grocery featuring a deli that serves all natural and organic selections, has opened in the West Village Development in Smyrna.

Founded in 1996, Atlanta-based J. Christopher’s with 29 restaurants specializing in breakfast, brunch and lunch, has expected openings in 2009 in Woodstock, Macon, Johns Creek, Brookhaven and East Lake... Rita Restaurant Corp. of Madison, GA, has announced its franchising program for its flagship brand, Don Pablo’s. The company plans to franchise many of its existing 40 company-owned units as well as new units with plans for 30 restaurants by 2012... Firkin Pubs are opening The Firkin & Crown and The Firkin Lindbergh, along with 5 other pubs that are in development in the Atlanta area. Firkin Lindbergh will be located on Main Street in Lindbergh City Center and the The Firkin & Crown is expected to open in the Avenue Forsyth in Cumming. 24-year-old Parag Patel has plans to open Cumming in February and future areas include Buckhead, Virginia-Highland and Dunwoody. Tourondel was Bon Appétit Restaurateur of the Year 2007 and Food & Wine Best New Chef 1997 (see story page 4)... Rumor says Legacy Properties and Concentrics Restuarants (One Midtown Kitchen, Two Urban Licks, Trois, Tap, Parish, Murphy’s, Lobby at Twelve, Room and STATS), who partnered on STATS downtown, are planning a $5 million+ dinner-only, 10,000 sq. ft. spot on the roof of the Hilton Garden Inn proposed to open in 2010... Antica Posta is anticipated to open a second location soon in the former SAGA location on Crescent Avenue in Atlanta. The original Antica is located on Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead and rumor has it that they now curing their own meats and planning a retail outlet on site to sell to the public... A modern lounge called Suite, featuring a menu of sophisticated bites and cocktails in an ultra modern setting, will open in the Metropolis condominiums on Peachtree Street in early ‘09. Atlanta’s Fox Sports Grill at Atlantic Station and its five sister restaurants across the country have been purchased out of bankruptcy by one of the concept’s founding investors. William Dallas and a group of new partners have bought the chain of six Fox Sports Grill locations. Dallas will take over as principal of the chain under its new parent company, DHP LLC... Even though the 4-month-old eatery on Briarcliff Road in Druid Hills bears his name, Frank Ma South, it’s rumored sushi guru Frank Ma has left the building.
Christian Shultz, the opening general manager at Fourth & Swift in the Old Fourth Ward has left the restaurant... Lenny Robinson, formerly with Les Fleurs de lis Cafe and The Tasting Room in Sandy Springs, has joined Maureen Kalmanson and Pamela Furr at Peasant Bistro in the Luckie Marietta District Downtown... After two years as sous chef at the Spanish and Latin restaurant Eclipse di Luna, newly tapped executive chef Ben McPherson at the Miami Circle location is busy uniting the two (Miami Circle & Park Place on Ashford Dunwoody) in a samba of creativity and modern culinary techniques. McPherson’s new menu is geared to please seafood cravers, carnivores and veggie-lovers with more than 30 tapas with exotic Spanish names priced from $2.25 - $5.95.

Calavino Donati (also owned Roman Lily Cafe) opened his Calavino’s Restaurant in September of ‘07 on Mead Road in Oakhurst Village. After catering One Georgia Bank’s Thanksgiving party this year offering soul food sides, Calavino, at his wife Doria Roberts’ suggestion, began offering them as weekly specials with his wife providing the entertainment. Calavino has issued the following statement about Calavino’s: “Unfortunately, although it has met with great success, we can not afford to stay open long enough to fully implement the change. Another myspace notice from Gravity Pub on Glenwood Avenue: “Due to bureaucratic b.s. we will be closed January 1st until further notice. The process of transferring our liquor license from the previous owner has been a huge obstacle. We don’t know how long it will take to get the sign-offs we need but we hope it will only take a week. We will keep you posted on how things are going and when we will be open again - The Gravity Pub Staff and Management... Despite millions spent on renovations and only opened since February of ‘08, The Depot (Vickery’s, Steamhouse Lounge, Fontaine’s Oyster House, Highland Tap) in the former Atlanta & West Point Railroad Freight Depot on Memorial Drive, has issued this statement, “We regret to inform you that The Depot is now closed.”... Atkins Park on N. Highland in Atlanta enjoys a colorful history as Atlanta’s oldest continuously licensed tavern. The pub expanded a few years ago to Smyrna and then again to Vickery Village in Cumming. Sadly the Cumming location has recently gone out of business... Under new ownership since March of ‘07, Vine Restaurant on N. Highland Avenue, has shuttered its doors... Pao de Mel on Windy Hill Road in Marietta, who made the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s “Top 50 Restaurants” list has closed their doors... A longtime favorite for cuban sandwiches, From Havana To U, on Highway 9 N. in Alpharetta has also closed... Sister restaurant, Fat Matt’s Chicken Shack, to the popular BBQ/music joint a few doors down, Fat Matt’s Rib Shack on Piedmont Avenue, has shuttered its doors... Having opened in mid ‘07, the Blue Ocean Japanese Restaurant in the McDaniel Square Shopping Center in Duluth has closed... La Strada Italian Restaurant started in East Cobb some 20 years ago and added a location to the Dunwoody area north of Sandy Springs a few years later. It seems the Dunwoody location has closed for good... 7 Sushi Bar, which opened recently in the Spire building in Midtown has already closed its doors. This was also the former location of Fune Sushi Bar that was open for about 8 months in 2007... The long-running Houlihan’s at Park Place in Dunwoody has met its demise and also shuttered its door.

Justin Keith thought he wanted to be an FBI agent when he was young. But looking back he says food has been in his blood from the beginning. Being raised as one of three children by a single mom, everyone had to help out. “If you helped with dinner, you didn’t have to do dishes. Her long time support of the restaurant industry and its legislative initiatives earned her the award and a place in Georgia’s restaurant history. Anna was also involved in the creation of the ‘Taste of Asia’ week, a program that affords metro Atlanta’s Asian restaurant population an opportunity to market themselves both to residents and tourists. Along with her business and marital partner George Hsu (pictured above) the duo are planning a new, upscale restaurant, AZN, that is scheduled to have its Atlanta debut in 2010.
