Researching as 2006 fades
by ron hudspeth

We're about to say goodbye to 2006. Good grief, 2006?
Yours truly is working on his 37th year of pounding a typewriter in the city of Atlanta, and let me tell you -- that's alot of cocktails folks.
Here are some 2006 high (and low) lights:
•Don Sharpe , George Watson and Pete Peck, ruled the Atlanta nightlife and restaurant scene in the 1970s which began with the fabled Bucket Shop in the original Underground Atlanta. From there, Sharpe, Watson and Peck quickly spread their pub-restaurants, known for hearty food and over-the-top fun, all over Atlanta, opening The Brandy House, The Scotch House on the southside, Alexander’s Eagle on Clairmont Road in DeKalb, The Hunt Club in Cobb and The Riverhouse in Roswell... As Atlanta Eatzi's locaitons close, former chef & GM plan new concept
William 'Ford' Fry, former corporate chef for Eatzi’s, and business partner Ray Camillo, former Eatzi’s general manger, will be opening JCT Kitchen and Bar in the space that formerly housed Sampan in the Westside Urban Market in January. “This is a classic bistro with authentic Southern style,” says Fry. “It’s the kind of homey, comfortable place where guests instantly feel at ease, whether they’re regulars or in for the first time.” JCT will be an upscale, casual, split-level space. The downstairs JCT Kitchen features a light, earth-color palate in tones of zinc, stone, sky grey and caramel... MORE
RED NECKERSON - Page 4

Time to jolly up for the holidays and as an old cynic, it’s a strain. I love the Christmas season, I just don’t like shopping, mailing out cards, putting up decorations, trimming a tree, having big dinners, wrapping and exchanging gifts and listening to horrid songs such as The Twelve Days of Christmas, stuff like that. I miss the days of shopping trips with our group of radio people and music promoters that would turn into prolonged bouts of drunken debauchery. I get so nostalgic this time of year... MORE

For quick, cheap

While the big name paper critics are busy dining at popular restaurant openings like Saga, and gearing up for swanky Sweet Lowdown, I’m out sifting through humble neighborhood eateries in search of down-to-earth deliciousness. And recently, I discovered that unpretentious delicious morsel at an unassuming little to-go shop near Edgewood called Turnover Time... MORE
