Satterfield & McCarthy
debut Miller Union

by hud report staff

Steven Satterfield, longtime executive sous chef at Watershed and Neal McCarthy, former Sotto Sotto’s general manager, have opened their 70-seat, ai3-designed restaurant, Miller Union, featuring simple food near the corner of 10th Street and Howell Mill on Atlanta’s Westside. Miller Union’s unique dining space sits on the site once occupied by Miller Union Stockyards. Captain John Miller founded the Stockyards in 1881 as a destination for horse, cow and pig venders. Railroads intersected nearby and brought an influx of people and animals, while the adjacent White Provision Company, United Butchers Abattoir and Star Provision Company made the area the center of Atlanta’s meatpacking industry. After a devastating fire in the 1940s and a general decline in the 1960s & ‘70s, the stockyards and Westside neighborhood fell into decline. Miller Union is located at 999 Brady Avenue, Atlanta, 678.733.8550. Hours are Monday - Thursday 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 5 to 11 p.m. Visit online at www.millerunion.com for more information...FULL STORY

The Research Continues... (The Scoop - Page 3)

In the oven...
(The following are but a small mention of the new places on our ‘Coming Soon’ radar...)

Chef Shaun Doty (Shaun’s on Edgewood Avenue) plans to join the ‘trendy’ burger concept bandwagon and open a casual burger restaurant in the White Provision development along with partner Erik Maler. The duo hasn’t announced a name yet and anticipate a spring 2010 opening for the 2,400 sq. ft. eatery in the Midtown West mixed-use project. Currently open in the same area are Abattoir, the newly opened Ormsby’s and West Egg Cafe... The Sage Woodfire Grill on Haynes Bridge in Alpharetta has enjoyed much success over the past few years and is now venturing out with a second location. The owners are taking the former 8,000 sq. ft. Houlihan’s space in Park Place at Perimeter and are shooting for a Spring 2010 opening. Other venues in the Sage family include The Diner at Crabapple, The Diner at North Point, The Diner at Sugar Hill and Peachtree Diner on Holcomb Bridge in Roswell... The little sports cantina that could, Twisted Taco, is also adding another location. While a Tucker spot is listed as ‘coming soon’ on their website, yet another (the sixth) is rumored to be planned for the Emory University area in the school’s old bookstore on Oxford Road. The 5,000 sq. ft. Tex-Mex restaurant is expected in the spring 2010... Laughing Out Loud Restaurant Group, which owns the Arena Tavern and Nacho Daddy's concepts in Gwinnett, has plans for three more locations in 2010 throughout the Atlanta area. Co-owner Michael Miller (formerly with Hudson Grille in Brookhaven) projects a summer opening for a Buckhead location. Others to follow will be in Midtown, Downtown and Kennesaw. Along with Miller, partner Tony Shaw also plans to open another Nacho Daddy's for 2010 as well... WPD Center LLC, hopes to open up yet another burger joint called Farm Burger, in the old Voila space on W. Ponce de Leon in Decatur. They are in the process of seeing if they can get a parking variance. Here’s part of their statement for the Zoning Board in Decatur: “Farm Burger will take product sourcing as serious as it takes crafting one of the world’s finest burgers. Our belief is that a great burger starts with exceptional beef from exceptional cows raised on sweet Georgia grass alone. It starts with a $6 burger. From there we will offer a wide-range of seasonal accouterments, many grown on our 100-acre organic farm in Athens, Georgia, as well as diverse artisanal cheeses, housemade pickles, local eggs and culinary delicacies such as roasted bone marrow, house-cured bacon and charcuterie.”... Latest reports say Genki Sushi’s owner Reid Zeising has plans for 5 more locations in Atlanta and one in Athens. He currently has a two locations on Roswell Road, one in Buckhead and the other at the Prado in Sandy Springs. Zeising has signed a letter of intent in Virginia Highlands and expects to begin construction in spring ‘10. He is also looking at Vinings, Decatur, Midtown and Athens... With longstanding locations on Peachtree in Atlanta and Ashford-Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody, Cafe Intermezzo is going international. Hartsfield-Jackson ‘International’ Airport to be exact. The European-style coffehouse offers over 100 cakes, cheesecakes, pies and tarts and will be located on Concourse B... The former Starbucks space on Centennial Park West downtown is awaiting its new tenant, Baja Fresh Express. Latest rumors say it should happen sometime around December 1st... Chef Nhan (Wasabi in Castleberry Hill) should also be getting close to debuting his newest pho/noodle Vietnamese concept, So Ba (meaning ‘my third’) in the former Cantina La Casita spot on Gresham Avenue in Atlanta... The folks over at Mega Taco in Norcross also have a new place planned, El Molcajete, a 4,800 sq. ft. full-service Mexican restaurant for Hamilton Mill Road in Buford... Just this past July a local restaurant broker had Bobby G’s Chicago Eatery on Morris Road in Milton listed ‘for sale.’ This month, word on the street has Bobby G’s opening a second location in the former My Panini space at Lindbergh City Center. Stay tuned... Atlanta’s ninth unit of Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is scheduled for early December on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs... Canadian frozen yogurt chain Yogen Früz is coming South. The company has an agreement with Atlanta-based LB Yogurt LLC to open 10 stores in Georgia over the next few years. At Yogen Früz customers create their own mixes of frozen yogurt and flash-frozen fresh fruit. The next Atlanta area location is planned for Buford Drive in Buford... Ray’s New York Pizza is opening a 7th location in January on Chastain Road in Kennesaw in the Village in Town Park. This is a former Little Azio’s.

Updates...

The devastating September floods throughout the Metro Atlanta area had left many businesses under water with a long clean-up ahead of them. The 14-year-old Canoe restaurant on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings was among the casualties with water throughout. Clean up efforts included completely tearing the restaurant apart and putting it all back together just in time for its reopening at Thanksgiving... Richard Blais’ trendy burger haunt, Flip, is expected to land another stop in Buckhead in early 2010. But first, rumors are saying the next unit will make its appearance December 14th in Birmingham, Alabama -- complete with liquid nitrogen milkshake bar. More Blais rumblings around town are saying he is also developing a new ‘hot dog’ concept that mirrors his Flip ‘burger’ concept. We’ll keep you posted... Katie Birmingham’s Noon Midtown, which opened on Peachtree earlier this year offering sophisticated sandwiches, soups & salads, is expanding its offerings and may soon have liquor, beer & wine selections on hand... The move of the former Cheyenne Grill staff and opening of the latest Hudson Grill in Midtown was a success but rumblings on the street say a planned Virginia Highland Hudson Grille is on hold. As of print time, Metrotainment was waiting to hear from the Neighborhood Planning Unit for approvals. In the mean time, Metrotainment Cafes is in the process of introducing a restaurant & retail version of their wholeseale bakery in the former Marc Anthony’s space in Brookhaven called Sugar Shack... Earlier buzz on the streets had said restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten was looking into another concept restaurant for the W. Hotel Buckhead. Now we are hearing from Atlanta Magazine that he may no longer be overseeing the Spice Market he opened back in 2008 in the W Hotel Midtown... We have a couple of ‘Tastees’ on our radar. There is a sign on the old Happy Herman’s on Cheshire Bridge that says ‘Tastee Coming Soon’ and other rumblings have Tastee Restaurant ‘coming soon’ to the former Old Wooden Crate space on Peters Street in Castleberry Hill... Debbie Benedit (wife of former Havana creator) debuted her resurrected Havana Sandwich Shop (destroyed by fire over a year ago on Druid Hills) last month in the Crossroads Shopping Center on Buford Highway. January 1st anticipates the opening of yet another reincarnation of the eatery, this time by William Benedit (a relative of the creator), in the Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway in the former Cafe Mex space.

Cha, Cha, Changes...

Lola Bellini Bar & Restaurant originally opened in the Terminus Building in Buckhead as Here To Restaurants Group's original Italian concept. As time passed the location was re-concepted to offer Mediterranean cuisine but it didn't seem to help. The next step? Lola will be re-concepted again as ‘Cantina,’ set to open early in 2010, and will have a Mexican-style with part of concept borrowed from another Here To Serve eatery, Noche. Prices are expected to be lower and the atmosphere a little more ethnic than Lola’s... New owners took the reins a few months back of Jeffrey’s Sports Bar & Grill on Horizon Drive in Suwanee. Halloween night was the debut of the concept for the team introducing Twisted Tavern. Another watering hole in that area, Skelly’s on Nelson Brogden Boulevard in Buford, has also since been converted and is now sporting the Twisted Tavern signage as well... Husband/wife team, Scott & Elis Cole, have purchased Baguettes & Bagels Deli on Mansell Road in Roswell... The year old Burger Shack on Mount Zion Road in Morrow has been bought by new owner Mohammad Shakir... Michon’s Loft, serving smoked meats and seafood and featuring live entertainment, has relocated just down the street to 1583 Virginia Avenue in College Park... Sweet Georgia Brown Buffett on W. Pike Street in Lawrenceville has changed ownership and is now called Yebar Pure Foods.
