Chris & Michelle Sedgwick joined forces with partner John Kibler (formerly with Southern Railway Company) in 2006 to create a new 'fun' open-air Mexican fare concept, Pure Taqueria. The couple's other ventures include Bistro VG, Vinny’s on Windward, Theo’s Brother’s Bakery and Aspens Signature Steaks. With an original 'Pure' location on Roswell Street in Alpharetta, the trio awaits a second opening on Chambers Street in Woodstock in late August and another to follow in the former Grape space on N. Highland in Inman Park. Pure Taqueria will be located at 44 Chambers Street, Woodstock. The Inman Park location will be at 300 N. Highland Avenue, NE, Atlanta. Chef Paul Albrecht opened Social Vinings back in March on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings. He is following up with yet another venue in the area in Vinings Jubilee in September, The Burger Lounge. He describes it as, “A fancy burger joint that serves a variety of creative burgers, hot dogs/homemade sausages, salads, and sharing appetizers. This restaurant will be family oriented with a heavy emphasis on children’s activities. At night guests can enjoy a full sleek bar boasting burger friendly martinis.”... Bocado (Spanish for bite) is the name of a new restaurant opening on Howell Mill in West Midtown. The two store-front space is currently being converted by ai3 Design Firm and although the cuisine hasn’t been finalized, pizza will most likely be a portion of the menu when the eatery opens in September. Owner Brian Lewis previously owned Table Restaurant in Birmingham Alabama... Atlanta Magazine is reporting that Charlie & Nan Niyomkul of Tamarind Seed Thai Bistro and Nan Thai Fine Dining will be converting the empty space on Peachtree left by the closing of Chef Gary Mennie’s Taurus and says it will be called Vertigo. The new restaurant, a Thai barbecue place, will open softly late this year and is said to be in full operation by New Year’s... A themed restaurant from the 1940’s era designed to look like a World War II Officers’ Club, 57th Fighter Group resided on Clairmont Road for many years before closing in January of 2007. Complete with old Jeeps, replica WII planes, a guard post and war relics all over the property, the latest rumblings on the street say 57th will reopen in September under new ownership -- but no word on possible theme or name change... Steven Satterfield, longtime executive sous chef at Watershed and Neal McCarthy, Sotto Sotto’s general manager, are said to be opening a 70 seat, ai3-designed restaurant, Miller Union, featuring simple food this fall near the corner of 10th and Howell Mill Road on Brady Avenue... Other sources are saying Cinco Mexican Cantina will begin construction on a new unit at Akers Mill Road & US 41 in October. Cinco currently has locations in Cumming, Suwanee and Alpharetta. Previous reports had said Cinco would also be opening in Woodstock’s Hedgewood Development on Chambers Street. No word on the progress... Uncle Julio’s Casa Grande (located on Peachtree Road) is opening a second Atlanta location in the fall in the Perimeter Town Center development at the corner of Hammond Drive & Peachtree Dunwoody Road... Huw Thomas’ Dunwoody Restaurant Group (Bat & Ball, Dunwoody Tavern, The Royal Oak, Iron Horse Tavern, The Ship & Anchor Pub, The Crown & Anchor) has announced they are opening the Robin Hood Tavern in the former Atkins Park location in Vickery Village in Cumming. The website says opening in 90 days... Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery originally opened its doors in 2003 inside the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. Tilted’s claim-to-fame seems to be the waitresses who don knee socks and short, plaid kilts with matching halter tops. An Irish ‘Hooters’ of sorts? The first metro Atlanta debuted earlier this year in Johns Creek and now the former Old Mill Steakhouse space on Cobb Parkway will be the next home for the modern American, Irish, Scottish, English sports pub. A third unit is planned for Cobb Place Boulevard in Kennesaw... In researching the closing of The Old Mill Steakhouse on Cobb Parkway, we also found a local Restaurant Broker that has The Old Mill Steakhouse location on Savoy Drive in Chamblee listed ‘for sale.’... Supposedly starting construction at 1447 Peachtree Street, the Grand Empire Palace & Resorts’ theme will be the seven wonders of the ancient world. Anchor tenants are rumored to be well-known restaurants chains and the family fun and entertainment part of the venue will be modeled after a Dave & Buster’s-like concept with an ice skating rink and bowling alleys... Another source says the next Twisted Taco (the 6th for Metro Atlanta) location will be on Northlake Parkway in Tucker in a former Chili's space... The Iberian Pig is expected late August in the former Sage On Sycamore location on Decatur Square. The Castellucci family (Sugo Restaurants) developed the new concept whose menu will feature slow roasted pork as well as a variety of other items... Emerald Coast Coffee & Grill, a concept developed by veterans of The Coca-Cola Company, will be opening its sixth location in the Terminus 100 building in Buckhead later this fall... We are following up on information that a new restaurant, Coo Coo Nest, is opening in August on Freedom Parkway in Cumming. This is at the intersection of Freedom Parkway and Pilgrim Mill in a freestanding building just of of 400. There is another source that has the Three Dollar Cafe Norcross as a connection, but we haven’t been able to confirm... Former Aja pastry chef, Arpana Satyu, is said to be opening Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in August on Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Cumming... Pirates Pub ~ Another source also has this eatery opening August 3rd on Buford Highway in Atlanta... Taki Japanese Steakhouse, with locations in Macon and Hiram, Georgia, is slated to open its third outpost in the Perimeter Village Shopping Center in Dunwoody this fall... A new Vegan restaurant, Loving Hut, is opening in the former Big Fish Seafood Grill on Spalding Drive in Norcross... Listed on a local contractors site as one of their projects, Mojave Southwestern Grill & Taqueria, is supposed to be opening late August on S. Main Street in Acworth. It’s described as upscale southwestern dining in Cobb County at the Main Street Exchange... Aurum Lounge was shooting to open August 1st in the Metropolis building, taking the street level space on the 8th Street side. Owner Mike Soo is a resident of Metropolis and Aurum (Latin for Gold) is being designed by Atlanta-based Habachy Designs. The concept will have a gold and chocolate color palette. It’s also being said the menu will not include anything fried in it’s bar fare selection of sushi, small tapas and sandwiches... Thumbs Up Diner will be introducing another location in Roswell soon at the corner of Woodstock Road and Hwy. 9... The name of the new restaurant Arnaud Michel (owner of Anis Cafe & Bistro) is opening in the former Allegro space on Dutch Vally Road will be Amuse and is expected to open by the end of September. The chef will be Lenny Robinson who was chef at Anis for several years as well as the Peasant Bistro, Les Fleurs de lis Cafe and The Tasting Room in Sandy Springs.

Locos reinvented...

The Buckhead Bar & Grill has opened next door to Moondogs and Peachtree Tavern in the recently vacated Locos Grill & Pub spot on Peachtree Road in Buckhead... An Iranian fast-food spot, Kabobee, has opened on Whitehall Street in Atlanta. Owner Reza Ashtiani also runs Atlanta Marble next door.... Prima Italian Restaurant is a new Italian Restaurant located in the Scottdale community of Decatur on N. Decatur Road. They feature Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner and late night appetizers along with a full Bar... A new Italian eatery, Viagio, debuted in Lenox Square’s food court described as a ‘new offering in the fast-casual dining segment.’ Viagio features a system that’s capable of producing ‘al dente noodles in less than 30 seconds.’’ Much like the Figo concept, diners choose from a number of basic pastas (such as fettuccine, spaghetti and penne) and select an accompanying sauce (Alfredo, meat, or pesto among others) to design their own dish... Kirkwood Corner Market, serving early morning coffee, croissants and biscuits, has opened on Hosea Williams Drive in Atlanta... Owner Andra Hall has expanded her Jacksonville FL-based company CamiCakes and has opened on Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

Ch, Ch, Changes...

Chef Todd Richards (Ritz Carlton Atlanta, Spice, Villa Christina, Blue Ribbon Grill, One Flew South) has taken over at the Edgewood Avenue Rolling Bones BBQ. In previous months, the location was advertised ‘For Sale’ priced at $95,000 for the business with a monthly lease at $3500 per month or buy business and Real Estate and all equipment, furniture, fixtures and smokers for $695,000... Pano’s Grand Cafe, Balon Rouge, Niko’s and Chez Niko were all rumored names of the signature Buckhead Life restaurant planned for the 3344 Peachtree Boulevard building. Sources now say the name will be Bistro Niko and the eatery which will open onto the new pedestrian oriented Peachtree Boulevard project in October. The chef is rumored to be from New York’s famed La Grenouille restaurant... Here to Serve Restaurant's first Italian restaurant, Lola Bellini Bar & Restaurant, opened at the Terminus building in Buckhead in the summer of '07 and “promised to be the first antipasto bar of its kind in Atlanta.” Lola has actually made a switch recently to Mediterranean tapas fare and small plates are now the emphasis... H & F Bakery (part of the Holeman & Finch Public House family) has closed its Peachtree Road digs to the public and will now sell wholesale only... West Egg Cafe will be moving under the new residential building in White Provisions/West Side Provisons District in the fall... The Cook’s Warehouse, with stores in Midtown, Decatur and Brookhaven, will be moving it’s main store to Ansley Mall in the fall. They will convert a 6,500-square-foot space at Monroe Drive and Piedmont Avenue that was formerly a Piccadilly Cafeteria... Harry’s Pacific Kitchen ~ A local website says this restaurant was supposed to open in The Forum in Norcross next to California Pizza Kitchen but has stopped construction and now sits vacant... The website for the Starboard Cove Marina in Flowery Branch had said the original restaurant at the Marina had closed and would reopen when the lake levels were back. New speculation has a new eatery, the Key West Bar & Grill, opening soon in the space... Originally thought to be Cafe Sage Hill, a new source and sign now says the name of the restaurant going into the former 27-year-old Dusty’s BBQ space on Briarcliff Road will be Briarcliff Cafe. And, the catering kitchen division of Dusty’s is now listed ‘for sale’ online with an asking price of $250,000... Former Decatur Supper Club owner, Michelle Niesen, is now managing the weekly fesh market ouside Studioplex in the Old Fourth Ward... Tony Larocco closed for dinner at his year-old Vita Restaurant a few weeks back and now has private events in evenings. Latest word says he hopes to reopen for dinner again in the fall... Octane Coffee is taking over the former Method Coffee space in Emory Village on N. Decatur Road. The space was Inman Perk before becoming Method Coffee and the original Octane Coffee is located on Marietta Street in Atlanta... The former Scoops On The Square on W. Crogan Street in Marietta seems to have changed its name and concept to The Lunch Box which appears to still have the same number, 678.407.3444... A local Restaurant Broker has The Yacht Club restaurant on Church Street in Flowery Branch listed ‘for sale.’ The owners are currently operating only for special events... Chef Geir S. Kilen’s Palm Beach Restaurant, located at 2180 Hwy. 20 W. in McDonough since Dec. ‘06, has moved to a new home at 910 Eagles Landing Parkway in Stockbridge... Utage Steak & Sushi on Duluth Highway in Lawrenceville has closed and will reopen as Shogun Japanese Steakhouse.

owner of Antica Posta in Buckhead, has opened a new venue on Crescent Avenue in Midtown in the former Saga location, Joia Restaurant. Joia’s interior features floor-to-ceiling windows and is an ornate restaurant in hues of blue, red and gold as well as a lounge that features DJs weekend evenings and a dance floor. At press time, plans were to add lounge seating at the front of the building. Chef Brett Maddox (formerly with Aria) offers contemporary American recipes with a Tuscan flair. The old Kasan Red space on Flat Shoals Avenue has a new home-cooking tenant, Chazz Southern Restaurant. This new East Atlanta haunt, named after the owner’s young son, is serving up southern 'Soul Food.' Presented in the casual space is an array of traditional southern dishes (with cornbread) mostly priced below $10. A few are just over the $10 mark. Opening this month inside the Sweet Auburn Curb Market is the latest in the current ‘preferred-food craze’ of burgers (Flip, The Counter, The Burger Lounge), Grind House Killer Burgers. The set-up will be pretty much a build-your-own-burger where you choose between a beef, turkey or veggie patty, then choose either a six oz. patty ($5.99) or three mini sliders ($6.49) and lastly, style your burger with free toppings of lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, jalapenos and your choice of sauces. •Cafe Nineteen...
Cafe Nineteen
has arrived in Atlantic Station (in the former PJ’s Coffee space) offering everything from illy coffee to cuisine to a complete selection of liquor, bottled domestic and imports and wines. No matter the time of day – Cafe Nineteen is open and begins with all-day breakfast, converting to bar around noon and lapsing into a lounge later on. The interior offers flatscreen TVs (even broadcasting the menu), copper ceiling tiles and art adorned walls with works ‘for sale’ from local artists. On the heels of Livingston restaurant opening in the Georgian Terrace on Peachtree, Cafe Mims follows in the sister restaurant’s footsteps with patio seating across from the Fox Theatre. The Arizona Pub opened recently in Candler Park on Arizona Avenue in a former sales unit for the adjacent Arizona Lofts condos. The modern pub/eatery is a stone, steel & cement stucture and encompasses two levels with a bar on each, flat screen TVs, a lower deck, upper patio, picturesque dining upstairs and rotating artwork throughout. •Kiku Japanese ...
Japanese food does not always mean ‘sushi’ or ‘tempura.’ Another Japanese eatery, KiKu, (meaning Ki ~ chrysanthemum, Ku ~ flower), opened a location in Buckhead in April of ‘08 and now owner Dong Chul Son has a new location planned for Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta. This traditional Japanese steakhouse brings a combination of hibachi meals, sushi and Japanese fare to the Alpharetta area and will be KiKu’s fifth Atlanta location. The idea came from his childhood tours of Kinnetts Dairy, the ice cream that followed and the replica white & black 20-foot cow, Katie that stood on the Dairy’s lawn. Relics & Rarities is in an old garage (80+ years old) that’s been converted to a retro-style Ice Cream Parlor/Museum full of unique American relics and so much more. The purchase of ice cream is the admission fee and Pickard wants to both entertain and educate creating fond memories for others. Relics & Rarities Ice Cream Parlor will be located at 409 N. •Rick Tanner's World Famous Chicken...
Rick Tanner opened the first Tanner’s Rotisserie in 1986 off Northridge Drive in Sandy Springs and other locations soon followed. Tanner sold his franchise in the late 90’s and locations began to close soon after. Today, Tanner says, “The new owners changed our original recipes. Sadly Tanner’s went out of business but... fear not, because Tanner’s is back with all of your favorite originals. Vickery’s Bar & Grill was the original staple in the Midtown Atlanta restaurant scene since owners Jerry Nagler, Chip Ney and Sam Weyman along with their dog Dave, set up shop in 1983 as the place “to get a good stiff drink, comfort food and have a great time.” Since then they have opened two additional Vickery’s in Charleston, SC and one more recently in Atlanta’s Glenwood Park. The partners also own Fontaine’s, Steamhouse Lounge, Highland Tap and Gene’s Haufbrau in Charleston, SC. Vickery’s is located at 1106 Crescent Avenue, NE, Atlanta, 404.881.1106.
