Finding Atlanta's 'street food' and making new 'food' friends

A new blog has emerged on the dining scene plotting the moves of street food, Atlanta Food Carts. Its author, Christiane Lauterbach of Knife & Fork, The Insider’s Guide to Atlanta Restaurants and Atlanta Magazine, says the blog was “Born of frustration, started in hope, nourished by memories of delicious street food eaten al fresco in other American cities (Portland, New York, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, New Orleans among them), this blog would like to document a budding Atlanta scene inhibited so far by existing regulations adverse to the process.” You can visit www.atlantafoodcarts.com for daily updates... In ‘more blog news,’ the folks at Melissa Libby & Associates sent this over: Sometimes the city feels like a jungle to explore; so many fascinating new eateries to discover and so many new friends to make. Luckily, Eat Up Atlanta is giving Atlantans the opportunity to do both at the same time. Twitter friends -- Chad - @ratpack, Erin - @atl365, Laura - @LauraScholz, and Marisa - @MarisaSharpe have joined forces to create special events for folks who are both food and social media savvy. Acclaimed journalist John Mariani recently wrote a glowing review of Buckhead Life’s newest restaurant, Bistro Niko, in his national Virtual Gourmet Newsletter. Check out this excerpt: “Pano Karatassos and his Buckhead Life Restaurant Group have given Atlanta more wonderful restaurants than any similar company has done for any other city. There have been vanguard places like the Buckhead Diner and downhome places like the Atlanta Fish Market, a beautiful Greek place called Kyma, and a great steakhouse in Chops. Now, after researching French bistros for more than a year, he has brought the city its first significant French restaurant since Brasserie Le Coze closed several years ago. With Executive Chef Gary Donlick, Karatassos has crafted as winning an homage to the revered traditions of cuisine bourgeois as any in the U.S., all with a splash of American hospitality, for which BLRG is famous. The bistro is named after Karatassos’ youngest son Niko Karatassos, Director of Operations for the Group. BLRG has always run restaurants that are fun to be in, and this new bistro reeks of Gallic charm and joie de vivre of a kind Atlanta has lacked for a long time now. This is the way to do it right.” Another BLRG venue, Atlanta Fish Market, was recently nominated by Metro Mix’s editorial staff for Best Seafood in Atlanta and after a few weeks of heated competition, readers and fans chose them as #1. Congratulations to other Buckhead Life nominees including Pricci (Italian), Bluepointe (Best Sushi) and Chops Lobster Bar (Steak) for representing in their respective categories... Vying for the title of Atlanta’s Best Dessert, local professional pastry chefs, amateurs and children alike tied on their aprons for Share Our Strength’s 3rd Annual Great American Baking Contest held Thursday, March 11, at The Cook’s Warehouse in Midtown. With a flourish of flour and generous sprinkling of sugar, they raised nearly $10,000, twice as much as the 2009 event. Jennifer Etchison, executive pastry chef at Pricci Restaurant, won first place in the professional category, dazzling the judges with her Bauletti de Ricotta featuring tart purses with delicious filling and 1000 flowers honey gelato... This year’s James Beard nominees were recently announced and the local nominees for Best Chef: Southeast are Hugh Acheson, Five and Ten, Athens; and Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene in Atlanta. The James Beard Society is an organization that celebrates great food and America’s culinary heritage... Zagat has just released the results of its latest Atlanta Restaurants survey (coverage of 737 restaurants in Atlanta as voted on by 2,741 local, online surveyors) and Aria (490 East Paces Ferry Road) is once again in the top three for Top Food. In addition, Aria also received first place for Desserts thanks to Pastry Chef Kathryn King. The restaurant also received five stars from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s dining critic last month, making Aria one of only five Atlanta restaurants to receive this distinction. In addition to receiving the honor of Atlanta’s Most Popular restaurant for the 14th consecutive year, Bacchanalia earned a rare 29 out of 30 score for food, taking the highest ranking in the Top Food category. Zagat's second place ranking went to Quinones Room at Bacchanalia which also received the Top Service accolade... Gayot, the guide to the good life, has named chef Kevin Rathbun's Kevin Rathbun Steak on Krog Street in Inman Park, one of the 'Top 10 Atlanta Steakhouse Restaurants.'
