Where can you dine in a Colorado atmosphere without leaving the state? At one of Georgia's five Buckhead Colorado Steakhouse locations: Stockbridge, Cumming, Alpharetta, Peachtree City and the most recent addition which open at Stonecrest Mall in early December.

These are not your ordinary steakhouses. The exterior and interior are beautiful large log cabin structures. Inside expansive ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, wood-burning fireplaces, tongue and groove floors and wild game décor, transports you to a fabulous lodge. Patrons enjoy the casual atmosphere and great service while dining on hearty, generous portions of steak, wild game, fish or chicken entrees.

The steakhouses are known for the selection of wild game from Bison Tenderloin ($24.99) to The Game Warden, which are farm fresh Venison medallions grilled on skewers ($24.99). According to CEO and president Bruce Nicely, such starters as the Gator Tail ($7.99) are as much a novelty as they are tasty. Also recommended is the Venison stuffed Mushrooms, which are very flavorful, blended with sausage, Red Hills Amber sauce and white cheddar cheese ($7.49).

If steak is your choice, you can't go wrong with selecting from the eight lean and tender choices Buckhead Colorado Steakhouse offers. A sampling includes a generous portion of Colorado certified Angus beef cut Filet ($17.59 - $19.79), which is served with a salad and side choice or select The Pike's Peak Porterhouse, a giant 20 oz. certified angus beef T-bone ($22.99).

There is also another side to the Buckhead Colorado Steakhouse, one that started the business. At three of the locations, Alpharetta, Stockbridge and Cummings, a microbrewery is attached, known as The Buckhead Brewery. When Bruce Nicely started the business in the early nineties, the main attraction was the brew concept. Over the years, the restaurant side of the business has grown to be the emphasis of the business although the three units that have the original breweries are still brewing top shelf, award-winning beers.

At any one time there are five varieties on tap, which rotate from a recipe file of 73 varieties. Master Brewer, Matt Ruddell, who travels between the units is proud of the product he produces and rightfully so. The Buckhead Brewery has won many awards for their beers over the last eight years. The most recent was in November 2004, at the Georgia Craft Brew Challenge where they won best of show and best European style lager, "Octoberfest."

The most recent Buckhead Colorado Steakhouse is located at 2871 Stonecrest Circle at the Stonecrest Mall, 770.484.4240. For other locations and information, visit www.buckheadcoloradosteakhouse.com.

Little Azio's

Since opening in midtown two years ago, Little Azio's has caught on as an Italian retreat for midtown's 'in-a-hurry but want good food' crowd. Those who are regulars at Little Azio's appreciate the contemporary interior, which features marble counter tops, wood tables, white walls and a quick counter service setup.

The friendly, neighborhood pizza restaurant now has a sister location in East Atlanta. There is also a more formal restaurant, Azio's downtown, included in the trio. Owner Nick Ellis (who you may remember from Peachtree Café, Nickiemoto's and East Village Grille) and his silent partners are behind the expansion and future plans include a possible Buckhead Little Azio's location.

The contemporary interior is the perfect backdrop to the quick-service brick oven pizza, pasta and panini menu. Entree items also include Salmon Panio ($7.50), a popular item that offers roasted salmon with bacon, lettuce, tomato and a spicy mayonnaise, served with fresh homemade foccacia bread. Another popular item is the barbecue chicken ($8.50). Most entrees are under $20.

The Midtown Little Azio's is located at 903 Peachtree St NE, 404.876.7711. The Downtown Azio can be reached at 404.222.0808.

The East Atlanta location is at 749 Moreland Avenue, SE, 404.624.0440. Hours are Monday - Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday & Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit www.littleazio.com.

The Grape

The Grape wine bar and shop (The Seller) has provided a soft wine education while entertaining (edutainment) to Atlantans about wine since 2000 at its Vinings location.

The Grape is a one-of-a-kind concept that contains two separate businesses running side-by-side. The Grape's Seller is an inviting, well-planned wine shop for guests to browse wine selections based on The Grape's copyrighted 10-point classification system. The Grape's Wine Bar entices guests to taste the same wines available for purchase, along with specialty gourmet fare to match the suggested wine selections.

From specialty spreads of tomato with mozzarella and herb oil; spinach and smoked apple bacon; hummus with roasted garlic and salsa; imported olives; salmon and feta cream cheese to The Grapes gourmet appetizers of shrimp remoulade, smoked salmon, pate', antipasto, bruschetta, new Zealand lamb chops and crab porto, a wine category has been selected for you to choose your pairing.

The Grape offers Mediterranean quesadillas and crepes with a variety of stuffing combinations ranging from roasted garlic, bacon, cheeses, beef tenderloin, chicken, pesto, horseradish cream sauce, prosciutto, shrimp and marinara dipping sauce. Entrees consist of Caesar, Greek and tenderloin steak salads. The Grape Club combines grilled chicken breast and smoked bacon while the steak sandwich mixes tenderloin with caramelized onions and bleu cheese on a grilled roll. To round out the gourmet menu, desserts of cheesecake, crepe du jour, berries with vanilla cream & wafers and various chocolate selections are offered.

Gwinnett County residents have become the next to experience The Grape concept as it has opened in the Forum at 5145 Peachtree Parkway, Norcross, 770.447.1605.

The original Grape is located at 4300 Paces Ferry Road in Vinings, 770.803.9463. Atlantans can also be on the lookout for The Grape at Phipps opening in January 2005 at 3500 Peachtree Road, 678.848.9466. In addition, The Grape will open another location at 300 N. Highland Avenue in the first quarter of 2005, and one at City Walk Development in Sandy Springs during the second quarter of 2005. For more information visit The Grape on the web at www.yourgrape.com.

Kolache's in Norcross

Jack Lerman and Flor Rivera have opened Kolache Factory, a popular bakery-café that's franchising around the country, in Norcross on December 8th at 1560 Indian Trail-Lilburn Road.

In addition to serving kolaches (a product best described as a slightly sweet, pastry roll filled with a variety of ingredients ranging from fruit to cheese and meat), Kolache Factory offers its customers gourmet coffees and a variety of traditional pastries. These pastries include, but are not limited to, cinnamon rolls, croissants and strudel niks.

The freshly baked kolaches are a modern variation of the pastry roll that originated in Eastern Europe centuries ago. The company serves a wide range of kolaches that are appropriate for breakfast as well as a multitude that are suitable for lunch and dinner and even tasty snacks. Bar-b-que beef, Italian chicken, philly cheese steak and even a club (ham, turkey, bacon & cheese) kolaches are offered. Or you may prefer the polish sausage, cream cheese, bacon & cheddar or any combination of several fruits (peach, apple, cherry, blueberry, pineapple, lemon & apricot).

There are currently company-owned and franchise stores in Houston, TX; Indianapolis, IN; St. Louis, MO; Denver, CO; Cincinnati, OH; and McAllen, TX (Rio Grande Valley). Other franchise stores will soon be opening in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Ocala, FL.; and Austin, Texas.

Kolache Factory is privately owned and operated and also ships products nationwide with express overnight delivery. The bakery-café hours are Monday - Saturday 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. For more information visit www.kolachefactory.com.

Fusco's via Roma due

When Mike Fusco stepped inside the historic building located at 4815 South Main Street in Acworth earlier this year, it struck him as the perfect spot for his Southern Italian restaurant, Fusco's via Roma.

His 20 years of restaurant design experience has served him well in executing his ideas. With the help of his wife Diana, and a talented team of tradesmen, Fusco is almost complete with the transformation.

Among the past tenants of the space was a general store in the 1900s, and later home to Eaton's department store. As Fusco's via Roma restaurant, it will serve as a casual hospitality haven that captures both the old and new world charm. The opening is planned for late January. "This is a really neat historic area with great boutiques, restaurants, design studios and antique stores," says Fusco

During the renovation, the team discovered old exposed hand-sawed beams made of Georgia hard pines and beautiful brick walls. Incorporating the old and adding a new hand-built bar with Italian flair by local craftsman, Jason Worley, has added interest to the interior.

Fusco also hired Tom Breatheron who does architectural reclamation work. Breatheron expanded the front of the house, restoring it back to what it looked like in the 1900s. Diana added her touch with glazing the walls a yellow sandstone, giving warmth to the interior.

Fusco left the menu development to his younger brother, David, who owns an Italian Deli in Savannah, Georgia. David is moving to Acworth to be the executive chef. He and Mike are third generation of grandparents who came to the United States from Calabra, Italy. "We grew up in 'little grandma's' and Aunt Angie's kitchen, eating classic or New York-style Italian food," says Mike. David is planning to offer a blend of American Italian favorites with recipes from the family tree. "Fusco's will be a casual environment where you can come in and have a glass of wine, enjoy the food and atmosphere and leave satisfied," says Mike.

Fusco's via Roma is located at 4815 South Main Street, Acworth, 770.974.1110. The hours for lunch are Monday - Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Dinner Monday - Wednesday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday - Saturday 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday hours are 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Slice-O-Rama opens

"The slice is Right" has direct meaning at Slice-O-Rama, a recently opened New York-style pizzeria in Stone Mountain. "We offer affordable pricing everyday and even pay the sales tax," says co-owner Kris Dileva. A large pizza is priced at $9.75 and includes the sales tax.

Kris and her partners, Jeffery Bahlinger and Laura Northern developed the Slice-O-Rama concept to make it affordable for their customers, but also to interest franchise prospects. "We have our own unique flair and will make our concept affordable for franchising," says Dileva. The idea has caught interest, and a second franchise unit will open in Florida early next year.

The contemporary interior at the Stone Mountain location is designed to service the customers at the counter. Dileva and her partners have developed clever promotions to help drive the volume and ring the cash register. Every Wednesday is "Slice Night, from 5 pm to close, pizza slices are $1 and on Monday evening, all pasta dishes are priced at $5, including homemade meat lasagna, baked spinach cheese ravioli, baked eggplant Parmigiana and manicotti. Also on the menu are a variety of hot baked subs, calzone and salads. The specialty is the 12" cracker crust pizza cut into bit size squares.

Slice-O-Rama is located at 4895 Stone Mountain Highway, 770.979.7262 (RAMA). Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 10:30 am. to 10 p.m. Friday & Saturday. Sunday hours are 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information visit www.sliceorama.net.

David Howard, president of The Neighborhood Dining Group, knows from experience that good food and entertainment complement one another. Since 1991 when Howard opened his first Chicago's Steak Seafood and Pasta restaurants in Cobb County, he has focused much of his attention on fine-tuning the restaurant mix. He now runs three Chicago's Steak Seafood and Pasta restaurants in Atlanta, Bitter End Seafood in Marietta and Queen Anne's Revenge in South Carolina.

The most recent change has been a partial renovation of his Chicago's in Sandy Springs that opened more than a year ago. Howard expanded the area, formally a pub, and converted it into an upscale area where guests can enjoy live entertainment. Guests can choose to have dinner at the adjoining Chicago's restaurant or dine right in The Speak Easy Lounge and bar, which opened in January.

"We have the same concept at our Shallowford location and it's a proven formula. People love to enjoy good food, service and great entertainment," says Howard. The Speak Easy Lounge and Bar seats 75 and also has a dance floor. Entertainers include Danny Staggs who plays keyboard on Wednesday - Saturday evenings and a live DJ on Friday and Saturday nights that gets the crowd up and dancing.

The extensive menu lets you choose from steak, chicken, ribs, seafood, pasta and salads. Highlights include Chicago's surf & turf ($29.95), which offers a generous portion of grilled shrimp, lobster tails and tender beef tenderloin, topped with fresh crabmeat and Béarnaise sauce. All entrees include a house or Caesar salad. Comfort food favorites include the pecan chicken, which is sautéed and served over mashed sweet potatoes ($13.95). Fish entrees include salmon Oscar ($17.95), roast prime rib ($15-20) and "Bitter End" lump crab cakes appetizers ($9.95).

Early Bird Specials are served seven days a week from 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. for $10.95 and include filet of salmon, crispy fried shrimp, sirloin steak, beef tenderloin steak tips, penne rustica with plain or pecan chicken. All entrees are served with a salad and a warm, honey butter croissant.

$3 Mimosas, Bloody Marys, or Belinis served on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. accompanies brunch.

Tuesdays and Thursdays feature complimentary hors d'oeuvres from 4:30 - 6:30p.m. in the bar and on the patio touting $5 Martinis, $4 House Wine, $3 Margaritas, $2 Bud Light Draft and $1 Oyster Shooters.

The Speak Easy Lounge and Bar is located adjacent to Chicago's at 5920 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs, 404.257.8883. Hours are Sunday - Thursday 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Visit www.chicagosrestaurant.com for more information.

Bia's Pizza Kitchen & Café

Offering artisan pizza, Bia's Pizza Kitchen & Café is carving out its own unique niche in the ever-growing pizza restaurant arena. The owner, Yousuf Hasan, opened his 120-seat, full-service eatery in Alpharetta in December. Hasan has another Bia's in Macon, Georgia, which opened a couple of years ago.

Like the artisan pizzas, the interior of Bia's is also artsy. "The interior is very modern. You don't see any pizza restaurants that look like Bia's. People walk in here and say 'wow,'" says Harmon. "We also have a good variety of quality rated wines in our wine bar. We look for wines rated highly by wine publications, but are careful to choose wines that provide great value. We also carry Guiness, Bass, Sweetwater 420 on draft and Illy coffee."

"The hand tossed dough is made fresh daily," says manager, Jeremy Harmon. The signature pizzas are prepared with a thin crust and made from a secret in-house dough recipe, which are baked in a stone-heath oven.

In addition to hand-tossed pizza and freshly made calzones, Biz's offers a variety of appetizers, salads, pasta and sandwiches. Highlights include the chili stuffed shrimp appetizer ($7.95), oven roasted turkey salad ($5.95) and the Chicken Pollo sandwich ($5.95). Lasagna and baked ziti platters are also available for $8.95. Stuffed sandwiches of chicken, steak, veggies and tuna are topped with pesto and marinara sauce.

With the pizzas and calzones being the specialty of the house, varieties include the Alfredo's Shrimp, which is a white sauce, whole shrimp topped with a choice of chicken, shrimp and premium mozzarella cheese, along with a suggested Pinot Grigio wine. Another unique combination pizza is the Orient Express, which is a sesame oriental sauce, tender diced chicken and sliced red onions topped with mozzarella cheese, along with a suggested Sauvignon Blanc. Personal 8' pizza is $7.95 and goes up to a Grande 16" at $16.

Bia's Pizza Kitchen and Café is located at 3719 Old Alabama Road, Alpharetta in the Camden Village Shopping Center, 770.569.0047. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday - Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday & Saturday. Bia's Macon location is at 4420 Forsyth Road, 478.757.1170. Abbott's arrives

Nancy Berlin, who owns Carnegie's American Grille in the heart of downtown Atlanta, recently expanded her business operations by opening Abbott's Bar & Grill in Duluth. The new American grill has the details of an upscale restaurant with a casual atmosphere, attracting customers mostly in their thirties to fifties.

"The interior is very nice with hardwood floors and fireplaces but the vibe is very casual and relaxed, with great service," says manager Keith Wilkens. Live entertainment is also part of the mix. Talent such as Maxwell Taylor, who has performed as a backup singer with Earth, Wind and Fire, entertains at the club. Savannah Taylor, a female pop/country singer performs frequently as well. On most weekends Jeff Michael kicks up the beat with new and old dance music.

Tuesdays are trivia night and plans are in the works for a Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament night. "This is a real fun place. Our customers really enjoy themselves and keep coming back," says Wilkens. The main dining room accommodates 120 patrons and the bar area seats 75. An outdoor patio is sure to be packed during the summer months.

The menu offers a large selection of small plates so that customers can order a variety of tastings. Wilkens mentioned the Maryland crab cake ($10.95) as the most popular. Also offered are tenderloin medallions ($14.95), sesame BBQ ribs ($13.95) and naked fish ($11.95). Entrée items range from $13.95 to 22.95 and include Nebraska filet, grilled salmon and Abbott's famous lemon basil chicken.

Abbott's Bar & Grill is located at 10900 Medlock Bridge in the Medlock Promenade Shopping Center, 770.495.7110. Map to Abbott's.

Fatburgers for the masses

One of the continuing hospitality trends these days is celebrities, athletes and entertainers expanding on their talents by entering into the hospitality arena to leverage their names.

Whereas some use their name to brand a secondary business, others expand by investing into successful chains as franchisees. So is the case with National football league veteran and all-pro Willie Anderson, an Auburn alumni and Atlanta resident. The Cincinnati Bengals tackle is a big Fatburger fan. "I was hooked after trying my first burger in Los Angeles four years ago," says Anderson.

So hooked, Anderson has invested deeply into two markets as a Fatburger franchisee. Ten units are planned for Atlanta and 10 units will roll out in Cincinnati, Ohio over a five-year period. Fatburger was established in 1952 in Los Angeles, California and is a well-known eatery on the West coast. Twenty-five more units will open in 2005 bringing the total to over seventy nationwide.

The first unit operated by Anderson opened in Buckhead in early February and has attracted a lot of attention from those in the know. "Fatburger is a house-hold name in San Diego, California. It has the same brand recognition as a Waffle House would in Atlanta. It's always jumping and offers the freshest burgers," says recent transplant, Tanya Roberts.

Fatburgers is not your ordinary burger joint. It's not just their tongue-in-cheek marketing or the way they have captured the past with their stainless steel fixtures, neon signs and laminate countertops. Burger lovers are hip to the fact that at a Fatburgers there is also the hi-tech side, offering digital jute boxes (with over 150,000 songs) and flat screen TVs.

The real attraction are the made-to-order grilled or charbroiled burgers with a choice of mustard, relish, onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce, mayo and egg (which surprisingly is really good and blends in perfectly with the beef) served on sponge dough buns.

Fatburgers are available from a 1/3-pound ($3.69), Double Fatburger ($5.29), 1/2-pound Kingburger ($4.69) and a Double Kingburger ($6.39). In addition, menu offerings also include Turkey burgers ($3.89), hot dogs, chilidogs and grilled chicken sandwiches. Also, not to be missed are the homemade onion rings and "real" ice-cream milkshakes with or without whipped cream.

Each order is serenaded down the line after the customer orders at the counter, and when ready is delivered to the booth or table of the customer. Don't be surprised to find a line at Fatburgers or celebrity sightings. "This is an everybody's place. You'll see Mercedes and Rolls Royce's in the parking lot as well as beat up jalopies, everybody loves a fresh, hot burger and fries," says Roberts.

Fatburger Restaurant is located at 2625 Piedmont Road Northeast, Suite 34A, 404.844.0446. Hours are Sunday - Thursday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. You can visit www.fatburger.net for more information.
